Mrs. Harriett Elvira Houghton, 89. who was reared in Soquel and is a frequent visitor to the community since moving to Lompoc in 1917, died yesterday at her daughter's home after a long illness.
A native of Madonna Hot Springs near Gilroy, Mrs. Houghton attended the original Aptos school. Her husband, Herbert Houghton, died in a 1901 explosion. She reared her family in Sequel and then moved to Lompoc in 1917 to rear her daughter's six children when her daughter died.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Lillie Huvck, Lompoc, and Mrs. Albert Godfrey, Soquel; two sons, Solon Houghton, Santa Maria, and Clarence Houghton, Vancouver, Wash; also eight grandchildren. 18 great-grand children and 18 great-great-grand children.
She was 51 year member of the Martha Washington Rebekah Lodge No. 131 and the Soquel Pioneer Society. Funeral services are pending at White's mortuary. Interment will ; be in the IOOF cemetery, Soquel.
