ObituaryEdward F. Heiken Sr., most recently a resident of Bickford Cottage memory care in Peoria, died Wednesday (June 29, 2011).

Born March 16, 1918, in rural Eureka to Marie Frerichs Heiken and Behrend Heiken, Ed was the youngest of seven children. Soon after he was born, the family moved to El Paso, where he spent his childhood. He married Marjory Houghton of Peoria on April 18, 1941. She died in September 2003.

Marjory and Ed have one son, Rick (Maisie), Dunlap.

Ed served his country during World War II in Northern Africa and Italy as a member of the First Armored Division. He graduated from Bradley University in 1948 and later earned a master's degree in education from Illinois State University.
Ed's entire professional career was dedicated to the education of children as an elementary teacher, coach and administrator in the El Paso schools. In 1979, after 30 years of service, he retired and he and Marjory moved to Normal. Ed moved to Peoria in 2007 and was a resident of Bickford Cottage memory care when he died.

The Kiwanis motto "We Build" was an inspiration for Ed as an educator and as a Kiwanian. He joined the El Paso Kiwanis club in 1957 and was the club's president in 1959 and secretary in 1961-62. He joined the Bloomington Kiwanis Club in 1979. He helped charter the Bloomington Golden K Kiwanis Club in 1985 and served as its president 1986-87. He helped charter the Kiwanis Club of Normal in 1988. Ed was recognized as an outstanding club president, served as lieutenant governor of Division 22, was a George F. Hixon Fellow and a member of the Legion of Honor.
In 2006, the Bloomington Golden K nominated him for and he received the Luis V. Amador medallion for personal dedication and inspirational leadership.

Ed channeled his commitment to youth education and Kiwanis, along with his interest in woodworking and love for birds, into a program that helped kindergarten boys and girls in El Paso and Bloomington-Normal build hundreds of birdhouses. The annual classroom visit from "the birdhouse man" was a highlight that remains a fond memory for many. The program Ed started in his garage continues to this day.

Ed was a member and past patron of Bloomington Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star (60 years); life member of Normal Lodge No. 673 of the Masons of Illinois (59 years); and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies (30 years). He was a past member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Ed Heiken was a good man and a wonderful husband, father, teacher and friend.

ObituaryMarch 10, 1929 – October 24, 2022

Audrey Elaine Van Pelt passed peacefully surrounded by her family on October 24, 2022, at the Josie Harper Hospice House. She was born in Peoria, IL in 1929, to John and Alpha Houghton. She attended Bradley University, where she met her husband, Gene. He preceded her in death.

After Gene and Audrey married they settled in Omaha, Nebraska, and had three daughters. Because of Gene’s long career with McKesson Drug Co., the family had the opportunity to live in many different states. Each move meant new friends and adventures for the family. Audrey always made the moves go smoothly and always kept busy with church, singing in choir, being a room parent, leading Girl Scout troops, sewing, and supporting her husband in his career.

Later, Audrey was very active with the Questors Antiques Organization, quilting groups, managing a home health care business, and being a patient advocate at a Rapid City hospital.

Audrey was always ready to hop in the car and visit her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, no matter where they lived, enjoying the scenery along the way.

We will remember Audrey for her contagious smile, beautiful voice, her kind and giving heart, her outgoing spirit, and the generous love she gave her family and friends.

Audrey was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; their infant son, Jeffrey; her parents; seven siblings.

She is survived by her children and their spouses: Paula and Myrle Buzzell, Linda Van Pelt-Carr and Michael Carr, and Laura and Brad Peschong; 6 grandchildren: Julie Schreiber, Jeff Buzzell, Tara Pugliese, Greg Vogel, Andrew Peschong and Emma Younie; 11 great-grandchildren: Emily, Sarah, and Jack Schreiber, Nathan and Nicholas Buzzell, Ava, Leah, and William Pugliese, Jillian and Jett Vogel, and Baker Younie.
