Cortland, N. Y., Deo. 9.—A fact m connection 'with tbe recent elopement of Frank Hauirhton from MoGrawville, in this couQty,has just been made public. Haughton is the only son of John Haughton, a wealthy and respeoted resident of that village. Thirteen years ago he married Miss Nettie Warren, and two bright aud pretty girls are fruits of the marriage. Tile couple dwelt together in peace and happiness until about a year ago, when the husband became acquainted with a girl named Grace Robie, who lived near them. The Roble family at the time consisted of Mr. Robie, who bas been blind for live years; Mrs. Robie, who was a cripple; Grace, and two younger daughters. In December, 1884, Mrs. Roble, who had endeavored to check the girl’s arrowing intimacy with Haugh- ton, and bad forbidden tho latter to enter tho house, was taken suddenly ill one evening and died before morning. The attending physician pronounced it a case of pneumonia. After that the lovers threw aside restraint, met as often as they pleased, and« regardless of gossip, frequently went out riding together. On Nov. 85, having mortgaged his prop-, erfcy and raised what money he could by other means, H&ughton left home, bidding his wife good-bye and a dring her to kiss the children for him. He said lie intended to be away only a few days. Grace Robie disappeared the same night,and neither sbo nor Haughton ho3 since been seen in this neighborhood. Yesterday, while Mrs. Haughton’s children were playing near the stable curiosity led them to peep through an aperture in the wall. They discovered there a package of 2T letters, which they brought to their mother. The letters aro in Grace’s handwriting and are addressed to the missing man. In one of them she says; “Dear Frank; You are the only one that knows that I am a murderess.” This terrible admission lends color to the theories of foul play advanced by neierlibors in connection with Mrs. Robie's sudden death. Mrs. Haughton declines to make any revelation as to the contents of the other letters, beyond saying that some of them are too filthy for publication. Published: December 10, 1885
