BiographyIn the 1850 Census, Walden Houghten, age 24, of Vermont is living with Minerva H. Houghten, age 23 of Vermont, and Thomas J. Darling, age 40, of Vermont, in Fremont, Lake County, IL.

There is a marriage record between Walden E. Houghton and Minerva H. Spear dated July 6, 1850. There is a Minerva H. Houghton buried in Lakeside Cemetery. She died May 31, 1851. The headstone is broken, but per the Libertyville Cemetery transcriptions she is buried with "baby" and she was 24 years old.

Per the obituary below, he married Sarah Tatter on November 7, 1852 and had 4 children, 2 of whom survived him at his death (Minerva and May).

There appeared to have been a son named Charles who was 2 months of age in the 1860 census, but he was not in the 1870 census, so he was likely one of the children who did not survive him. The other was his daughter Sarah McCready (wife of Charles MCready), who (according to the probate records) died January 1, 1891. She left 4 children (grandchildren of Walden Houghton) who survived at the time of W.E. Houghton's death: Marion H. McCready, Alice H. McCready, Bertha A. McCready, and Florence F. McCready.

Per the probate records following his death, his surviving heirs included:

Wife: Sarah Houghton
Daughter: Minerva H. Gray (she appeared to be living in Minnesota when her father died, but at some point moved to South Dakota during probate - per a notarized document in 1896).
Daughter: May F. Rohr (she appeared to be living in Highland Park, IL)
Children of his deceased daughter, Sarah.

BiographyThomas Knight Houghton left the family farm at the age of 17 to became, first, a tanner, and then a dry goods clerk. He was a member of various local organizations in Plymouth, including the volunteer fire department and the Plymouth Sax Horn Band; he was elected to two terms as county recorder between 1858 and 1866. In a map for Daniel McDonald's 1881 county history, he is shown as owner of a plot of 137.45 acres in section 21, south of Plymouth. After his term as recorder, he operated Houghton and Bro., a grocery store in Plymouth that was still in business in 1880. In 1857, Thomas Knight Houghton became the proprietor of Union Town, which had first been platted by his brother-in-law, Bayless L. Dickson. At his death, his father, John Houghton, appears to have been, with his son John W. (brother of Thomas K.) joint owner of half of Union Town.6

BiographyHx of Marshall Co., IN: "A prosperous farmer, stock-raiser and landowner in Union Township, Marshall County, Thomas Houghton is a native of Rush County, Indiana, born on the 4th of January 1829...
Thomas Houghton received his education primarily in the district schools of Union township, although his father took much interest in his mental improvement and taught him how to read. While still a boy he was apprenticed to a harness maker at Plymouth, and after completing his term returned to his father's farm, of which he assumed the management...Following his first marriage Mr. Houghton removed to the farm upon which he now resides, which at that time consisted of 160 acres, but which now comprises 327 acres, scientifically cultivated and thoroughly improved. He is also the owner of two other farms of 166 acres, all in Union Township. As to his fine homestead, it may be said the Mr. Houghton has cleared about 320 acres of it and made the improvements, which have made it so valuable and attractive as a country home. He is also a valued citizen in his civic relations to the community, having served for seven years as a trustee of Union Township. He is identified with the Masonic order and the I.O.O.F. in Union Township, and he and his wife are faithful members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Culver, having been heavy contributors in the erection of the beautiful church in Culver."

John William Houghton: Because of a nasty law suit over the will of Thomas Houghton (D. 1918), there are some branches of the family that are still not speaking to each other!4
