ResearchKwasigroh: I found records posted on-line from the Lewis County, WV, courthouse "Death Records, Vol I", which gave the death date for Elizabeth as March 26, 1857. The 1870 census shows William as being 14 years old so he would have been born about 1856. I found this record on ancestry.com (see below). Obviously there is either an incorrect birth date or an incorrect date for the Newspaper, but if the birth date and age are correct, this could very well be the correct William Houghton. I know that Sarah Day Houghton's father, Francis Day, went first to either Kansas or Iowa before settling down in Illinois, where he died. So, I thougt maybe they went there together and William may have died there.

Residence1875CO, USA, "Marie Louise was upset and distracted in 1875, mostly over very serious difficulties Henry was having out in Colorado. Simultaneous with her correspondence with Ingram, Marie learned that Henry had been caught in a swindling con in Denver and tried on a charge of adultery with his partner in the con, a married woman; both were serving jail sentences. Marie may have not yet learned that she was the grandmother of a one-year old son. In her last letter to Ingram, a man she had come to trust with some of her most heartfelt memories, she summoned up a mother's warmth and hope against a grim reality of Henry's predicament. "I am glad you like my son," she wrote to Ingram; "The dear boy has had a sad experience. . . . Misfortune and depressing care had ever followed my beautiful boy-and now he seems struggling in what he calls 'hard luck' harder than ever it seems to me. He tries to cheer me 'that it wont always be so,' but I have a presentament that his fate will never change although I don't tell him so-and I know he is more like me than any of the rest and my faults as well as other qualities he inherits 'carries his heart upon his sleeve.' &c. I have a great pity for him on this account." Henry's prospects indeed got far worse in 1876, when he came home to Flushing, bringing his newly pregnant partner in adultery and the toddler son, and the woman died under mysterious circumstances while under Marie Louise's medical care"4

BiographyMrs. Shew (Mary Louisa Barney) was a freethinker and by no means conventional. In 1850 she divorced Dr. Shew and married another hydropath, Dr. Roland S. Houghton, but not before she gave birth to a child in 1849. Quite likely the father of the child, Henry Chapin Houghton, was Henry Chapin, an older and wealthy man who lived with the Shews and later the Houghtons.

However, it was this son Henry who proved to be the catalyst that brought Mrs. Shew Houghton serious trouble. After a varied and exciting career out west where he was charged with adultery, mule thievery, swindling, and “open and notorious lewdness,” Henry Houghton returned to the family home in New York, bringing with him his mistress, a Mary E. Stanley, who had evidently been Henry’s partner in crime as well. With them was a toddler who was understood to have been their child, even though Mary was at the time married to another man.

Residence: He lived on 18 September 1888 at Park Dale, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Henry is listed with this address in the estate of his grandfather Dr Lowery Barney in an announcement in the Jefferson Co. Journal.28
Note: On 25 September 1888, at Jefferson County Surrogates Office, Watertown, Jefferson Co., NY. "LaMorte Barney, Elva P. Barney, Kate L. Whitney, Mary S Houghton, Frank M Kilby as administrator of the estate of Fromundus Barney, deceased, all of Henderson, Jefferson County, NY. Census: He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Vaughan Twp., Thornhill Village, West York, Ontario, Canada. Henry is listed as a Hotel keeper (age 52), living with wife Mary & son Francis. Indexed as "Honey" Houghton, he lists his date of birth as Apr 14, 1849.29
Note: . Buffalo described a retirement party for someone in the RR business, and Henry and Frank R. Houghton were on the guest list and the two were singled out for providing spirited vocal music to salute the man who was leaving.
Census: He appeared on the census of 11 April 1910 at 191 Hoyt St., 20th Ward, Buffalo, Erie Co., NY. Age 53, living with wife Mary (34), daughter Winifred (18), brother Frank (48, single). Henry is a Depot Master for the Railroad. This is wrong age for Henry & Mary. The census says all 3 of their children are living as of 1910.26
Note: In December 1911. Henry transported the body of his brother Frank after his death from Buffalo to Adams, NY, probably by rail since he worked for the railroad.30
Census: He appeared on the census of 5 January 1920 at 365 Potomac Ave, 23rd ward, Buffalo, Erie Co., NY. Age 70, train conductor for the Railroad, living with his wife Mary.6
Death: He died in January 1921 at Buffalo, NY, at age 71 Died of Consumption.31,32
Census: He appeared on the census of 1 May 1930 at Main Street, Henderson, Henderson Twp., Jefferson Co., NY. Henry has died before this time as evidenced by his widowed wife Mary, age 65, living in the old Lowery Barney House with her husband Henry C Houghton's maiden aunt Elva Barney (age 80).336
