ObituaryOct 30, 2004Houghton, Ralph P.
Houghton, Ralph P., passed away at 7:10pm on October 27, 2004 at his home at Duck Lake at the age of 87. He was born July 27, 1917 in Mount Clemens, MI to Ralph H. and Virginia (Phillips) Houghton. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers Richard (in infancy) and John E. Houghton, daughter-in-law Ila Marie (Williams) Houghton, daughter Sp4 Betty L. Houghton, and his devoted wife of 52 years, Catherine M. (Hakes) Houghton. He is survived by his brother George L. (Marty) Houghton of Lake Placid, FL; daughters Nancy L. Owens (John) of Lake Worth, FL and Mary H. Houghton of Duck Lake; son Ralph H. (Betty) Houghton of Albion, MI; 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandsons. Surviving grandchildren are John F. and Douglas A. Houghton, Dylan R. Owens, Heather (Bell) and Prasad Velagalety of Kalamazoo and their two sons (Keerthan and Nikhil), Laurel Bell (Ian Stone) of Detroit, Miranda Bell (Chris Thurow) of Kalamazoo, and Jeremy Bell of Kalamazoo. Music in many forms held a prominent place in the Houghton household as far back as anyone can remember. Ralph was a member of grade school orchestras playing first chair violin. The violin he played was given to him at the age of 12 by his father who also played it for country dances. He added clarinet and saxophone to his primary instruments. Before and after marriage, he formed a number of bands over the years, playing weekend community dances and square dances in Hillsdale, Calhoun, and Jackson counties. He met Catherine Marie Hakes at one of those dances in Clarendon and married not long after. He bought and learned to play a hammered dulcimer made by Catherine's brother, Carl M. Hakes of Hanover. Ralph was an accomplished industrial engraver, woodworker, and general machinist. He also had a keen interest in firearms, particularly black powder ones. He made a replica of a Hawken center fire rifle and flint lock pistol, doing the heat treating and bluing all himself. They were very accurate pieces. Ralph moved to Homer, MI with his parents and graduated with the Homer High School Class of 1935. He later moved with his parents to their Albion home on South Superior. He attended Western Michigan prior to entering the US Army Air Corps in 1942. He served in WW II as a radio communications instructor at the Stevens Hotel training center in Chicago and finally as a B-25 pilot. On mustering out, he attended Albion College for three semesters before taking his family of three (with one on the way) and moving to Litchfield, MI where he started and ran an electrical contracting business until moving to Florida in June of 1960. His brothers, John and George, together with his parents had preceded him there to start a family industrial tool and die engraving business (Acromark Corporation). In 1968, he left the firm and with three others, started American Marine Products where he served as CEO for 27 years before "retiring" to his own private office furnished by the new owners. He sold the company to Mr. Robert Sullivan who continues to operate the boat windshield business. All through his years in active business, he was an active member of the Rotary Club in every community he worked in. He supported the Litchfield Community Schools a number of years as leader of the local board of education. Ralph was a 50 year member of the Masonic order in Franklin Lodge #40, F&AM at Litchfield, MI where he served as master. Funeral services will be held at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapel on Saturday October 30, 2004 at 3:00 P.M. with Rev. Daniel McQuown officiating. Masonic Lodge services will follow by Homer Humanity Lodge # 29 F&A.M. Burial will take place at Cooks Prairie Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapel on Friday October 29, 2004 from 6:00-8:00 P.M. and on Saturday from 1:00-3:00 P.M. Memorials may be given to Lifespan Hospice of Battle Creek or Albion College.

Biography"I am currently an instructional Technologist here at Albion Colege. I have the pleasure of working across all the disciplines, assisting faculty in using technology without damaging their courses. I specify and supervise construction of electronically enhanced classrooms, then maintain them for faculty, staff and student use. With 39 installations, it is a job - and they have to be kept running as faculty and students use them heavily and often depend on them. We are going to expand the science complex in the next three years and will double the number of enhanced rooms by then.

I hold a MS degree in Computer Information Systems from Boston University and a BS in Industrial Arts Education from the University of Tampa. I have often entertained the notion of proceeding with a doctoral program in Library Information Systems, but as I am almost 60 now, I may have to pass on that one. My resume is out on my campus web site. http://people.albion.edu/rhoughto/ - in the Resources section there are a number of sub-sites I am working on. One is a site for Cheroklee poetry and one for one of our music emeriti faculty members - Tony Taffs. He is making his life's work in compositions freely available via the web.

I have traveled all over the world and have a keen interest in world affairs, history, and a variety of topics. I thoroughly enjoy working with this faculty."

Pleased to meet you. If I am successful in making the trip to Boston next summer, I would like to stop by and visit with you briefly. The conference I attend is at the Weston in South Boston a short walk from the piers. Sounds like you are a very busy person. Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I work with 75 electronically enhanced classrooms and 42 portable media presentation carts here and the work gets a bit intensive just before break.
The main reason I worked on an electronic version of the 1912 Houghton Genealogy is to provide a means for correcting mistakes through footnotes and additional chapters with more current information including internet URLs for members of the family who have their own family websites. Also, the MS Word PDF creator does a very good job hyperlinking the table of contents and any indexes. It is located as a download link on the home page of my campus website ( http://people.albion.edu/rhoughto/ ). The original work was an OCR scan from the Higginson paper copy and still contains errors from the conversion process (1s become ls etc), but it is now in MS Word format with easy conversion to the PDF format. At some point, I really will retire and I propose to go through it page by page to remove those errors. The index numbering system is also flawed because of the attempt to link the Colony Houghtons with the Preston Houghtons.
With your permission and collaboration, I would like to introduce your comments below as footnotes to the 1912 version and perhaps include an image of the farm plan Maggi has along with it. I have also included the email address for Dr. Charles Vella who has conducted major purification research on the Houghton family which corrects many of the 1912 errors. Years ago, I met Agnes (Hurlburt) Bell who worked as one of the editorial assistants for that publication. She was familiar with many in the family who wanted to lay claim to estates in the UK as was common then not just with our family. But there are so many more of us who would just like to know where we came from and make the record for subsequent generations a little clearer. There is something to be said for being grounded in family history when so many in our society are rudderless and traveling aimlessly through life. Enough of the soap box.
Maggi mentioned that there were Houghton reunions around the country. Do you have some specific information about these and where they are located? My maternal Hakes line had several large reunions (Buffalo NY) near the turn of the 20th century. That family is equally as large as the Houghtons and as difficult to trace lines. Interestingly, that line seemed to start in Stonington CT close to the time Ralph and Jane settled permanently in Milton. Very close together for that period. Where Ralph Houghton and Solomon Hakes came from is as much a mystery now as it was then. As more of the ships which sailed the seas in those times are documented, both of them may turn up. There is Puritan history suggesting that a large number of those early immigrants set sail from the Continent after the Great Migration. We can always hope that something will turn up.
Thanks,
Ralph

Hello, all: Regarding the burial place of Ralph and Jane (Stowe) Houghton: Part of the problem is that Houghton's Pond was in Braintree at the time Ralph died, c.1705. Theoretically, the local church, and therefor, the burial place should be what is now Quincy. What is now Braintree was the Second Parish, dating only to 1715. Remember, also, that Ralph had lived in Milton (not at the Pond) c. 1679 -1684 or '85. He was a Selectman four of those years, So Milton is also a possibility Quincy has two cemetaries dating to the 17th century, but many of those older headstones are illegible: The cemetary department has no records anywhere near that old. The old Milton burial ground has a couple family crypts with no names on them Houghton's Pond was annexed to Milton c.1760s (Actually about 600 acres in Ralphs time, split between two sons later) Maggi has a plan of the farm dating to the time of the split. several features; house, barn, orchard, etc are shown. No burial plot is shown. That 1912 genealogy is defective in many respects: This in one of them. My Grandfather, Ralph Oliver Houghton, was the last to be born in the Homestead, 1889.

Thanks for the info. Please let us know if a July visit looks likely. It would be great to meet you!
Are you in touch with Allen Houghton from MA? I believe he may live in Marshfield and he works for the DCR in our Harbor Region.
We’ve had a few other Houghton family pass through the site as well. I believe the family hosts a big reunion each year across the country.

Hi Maggi - as a matter of fact I have a huge amount of information and I have worked on an electronic copy of the Dr. John Houghton Genealogy which was published in 1912. My current research centers on the English origins of Ralph and John Houghton's family lines. Have built a lot of background papers from internet articles, but those times are as muddy now as they were then. The John Houghton listed on the Abigail in 1633 is a different person that the John Houghton of Lancaster MA. I have been in contact with the Houghton family in England and there are a number of members who are interested in tracing their missing lines - the ones they lost track of during the English Civil War.
The Genealogy above may be downloaded from my campus website right on the initial page. It and the one for my mother's genealogy are the two most downloaded files on our campus web server. Feel free to download a copy if you have broadband. If not, I can send you one on CD. I have gathered a lot of E-Books relating to Winthrop and the Puritans of that era as well as some relating to the Hakes family of Stonington CT. Every once in a while I get photos in the message traffic. You are welcome to them. I am highly interested in any information you all may have regarding Ralph and Jane (Stowe) Houghton who originally owned the farm there. The biggest thing we want to do is locate their burial site. So far, according to John Schumacher-Hardy of Lancaster, nobody has been able to locate them. They were not listed among the family members in the Old Indian Burial ground in Lancaster. They have to be there somewhere.
Many thanks for your interest and I would look forward to visiting there next July - if economics favors the venture.
Cheers,
Ralph

Greetings,

I visited Houghton's Pond last summer not knowing it was part of the
estate owned my great grandfather 11 generations ago. Ralph and Jane
(Stowe) Houghton were the owners of about 340 acres which included
Houghton's Pond. Nobody seems to know where they were burried when they
passed away, but I think there may be a family burial site located
somewhere on the farm. Is there anyone well versed on the property
lines which were transferred to the Massachusetts Park and Recreation
department? I hope to visit again next July and would like to document
this site for our family genealogy.

Thanks,
Ralph
