Death Claims O.W. Houghton Last Evening

Death claimed Oscar William Houghton, 72, widely known sheepman at 8:00 p.m. last night at the home of his daughter Mrs. O. E. Sutfin at Richfield, following an illness of several months.
Mr. Houghton was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Francis Houghton, pioneer settlers of Tehama county. He was born December 10, 1872, on the Houghton ranch, 12 miles west of Corning, where he spent his entire life.
The last of three brothers widely known throughout Northern California, Mr. Houghton was preceded in death by Anson Miller Houghton and Ray Francis Houghton. A sister, Mrs. Bertha Shults is the last member of the family of four who engaged in the wool industry.
He was united in marriage to Miss Nannie Flournoy in August 1894 and to this union eight children were born four sons and four daughters. A son, Ornan [Ornon] Houghton, passed away several years ago.
Mr. Houghton was a member of the Newville Lodge, F. & A. M., which later consolidated with the Corning lodge, Olivet Chapter, No. 205. He was past master of Olivet Lodge and a member of Mystic Star Chapter Order of Eastern Star.
Surviving relatives are his wife, Mrs. Nannie Houghton of Corning; four daughters, Mrs. O.E. Sutfin of Richfield; Mrs. T. R. Gillett of Crockett, Mrs. Kenneth Reed of Williams and Mrs. Herbert F. Gabriel of Corning; three sons, J. W. Houghton and Clyde Houghton of Corning, and A. J. Houghton of Lebec; twelve grandchildren, Mrs. Charlotte Wolf, Omar Leslie Sutfin, Roy Sutfin, Dorothy Houghton, Frank Houghton, and Billy Ray Houghton all of Corning; Mrs. George Smith of Willows; Janet and Tommy Gillett of Crockett; Robert Houghton in the United States Army; Dolores and Betty Jean Reed of Williams; five great-grandchildren: Charlene and Leslie Arden Sutfin, Sammy and Loretta Faye Sutfin all of Corning and Sharon Smith of Willows; and one sister, Mrs. Bertha Shultz of Corning.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 23, at 2:00 p.m. at the Corning Presbyterian church. Interment will be at the Newville cemetery.10
