BiographySusan started across the plains with her (not his) two children and their daughter Molly Genneva. She died during the trip. This was in the Mormon Solomon Warner wagon train. The children were split up and put into homes. Reuben B. was given to a banker and taken to California. At the age of nine he ran away.

Gary Amer Houghton: Hi Charlie ; I see from your web site that there is some doubt as to the relation of Reuben Houghton to Joseph (father) and Oliver & Jonathan (brothers). My research so far has found only these four Houghton's in North,& South Crosby & Bedford Townships, Upper Canada ( low population in the early 1800s) . About 1834 Benjamin Tett established a general store in the village of Newboro . He kept records of what he bought and sold to the settlers. These were called "Day books " . Fortunately they were saved and are now in the archives of Queens University at Kingston , Ont.
A couple of years ago while doing reseach at Queen's I found out about them and was allowed to have a look through them. I found accounts for Joseph (father), Reuben , Oliver , & Jonathan.. As they all had accounts with the same General merchant , I believe Reuben would not have lived far from the rest of the family (I have land records for Oliver & Jonathan)
Reuben & Oliver's accounts ended in late 1837. It is known that many settlers from this area followed the Mormon missionaries West during 1837/38. This is why Oliver shows up in the 1840 Iowa census , settled on the Half Breed Tract . across from Nauvoo Ill. In 1850 Iowa census both Oliver & Reuben are listed in same place close together, both with a child born in Canada.
Joseph's account at store ended in late 1834 . I have found no clue's to where he went . ( eg. died , moved west with daughter Pheobe, or back east).
I have included info on the Tett general store along with some account records for Reuben. You can pass them on to William Wells Houghton. I know that this will not prove that Reuben is related ,but from what info we share I have very little doubt that he is. If you have any info that has been found to indicate otherwise would you please let me know.
I am still doing research and there are still many places to look , it just takes time. Thanks for all the work you have done on the Houghton Family Project.
