Later they moved to Detroit where he was a foreman for the Contractor's Equipment Co. for several years. He returned to Milford MI in 1931, where he worked as a mechanic and lived with his parents on the old home until their deaths. Since the marriage of his brother, Donald, he lived alone in the house. His familial home (since 1834, for a hundred years) burned down. It was a brick house on the farm. The Houghton farm consisted of 250 acres (200 in Milford and 50 in Commerche MI), taken from the government by grandfather Daniel Houghton in June 27, 1834 (passed on to Daniel Jr. in Jan 1869).6

ObituaryNov 22, 1938Bay City: funeral services for former Judge Samuel G. Houghton will be held at 3 p. m. Wednesday at the residence, 1601 Center Ave., and later t the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Elmlawn Cemetery. Judge Houghton, one of Michigan's veteran fighting jurists, died early Monday of a heart attack at a hunting camp near Spratt, Alpena County. He was 73 years old. Death came unexpectedly. He had showed no signs of impaired health when he left for his an-
nual deer hunt- ing excursion. Judge Houghton was born near Milford Sept. 3, 1865. received his primary education in Shiawassee County, am
later, although even then intending to study law*, went to Northern Indiana Normal College at Valparaiso, Ind.He began teaching school In Williams Township, continuing his efforts to become a lawyer by studying alone, and in 1895 he was admitted to the bar in Bay City. He continued teaching to buy his law books and spend a year in the office of C. E. Pierce before opening his own office. He revised the charter of West Bay City In 1899 and a year later became City attorney. In 1903 he helped prepare a charter to consolidate Bay City and West Bay City, became City attorney of the enlarged municipality, and held that office 12 years.
He became a circuit judge In 1916, holding that office steadily until, as a Republican, he was defeated in 1935 by less than 400 votes. He then returned to private practice. Judge Houghton was known as a man who would fight untiringly for any cause that he thought right or necessary. Outstanding was his battle to have a new court house built to replace the dingy one that stood for 64 years. Twice voters rejected bond issues. Then, virtually single-handed. Judge Houghton took up the losing fight, won support of the County supervisors, and then conducted a powerful campaign of education. The voters, evidently won in part by his proposal to provide a sinking fund to whittle away the full financial load adopted the plan. Judge Hough ton. for the first time, présidée In robes at his first court «essioi in the new building in 1934. He was an ardent sportsman He had not missed a deer sensor for 20 years, and each spring hr took two weeks for a fishing trip» Another hobby was wood-working An expert cabinet-maker, he hat a fully equipped workshop in his basement. He is survived by his wife, thr former Maude E. Ballard, ol Auburn, and a daughter, Mrs. Mar Jorie Eichelberger.
