  • Marriage*: William Houghton married Anne Gore on Dec 17, 1821 at St Aidan's parochial chapel, Billinge, England, The entries were, firstly, banns read for William Houghton and Ann Gore on 18 and 25 November 1821. The banns were not read for the third time. Interestingly, this was in All Saints church, Hindley which is some way from Orrell.
Secondly, there were banns read in St Aidan's parochial chapel, Billinge, for William Houghton and Ann Gore, both described as "of this parish" (which could be construed as the parish of Wigan). The banns were published on December 2nd, 9th and 16th 1821 and the couple were married on the 17th December 1821. It is to be noted that both William and Ann were aged under 21, so perhaps there was some parental disapproval which resulted in the marriage being not too close to home.1

Note1861Did William marry again? It's possible. In the 1861 census there is a William Houghton, aged 59, living in Clap lane, Upholland with another Ann, aged 60, but born in Chorley. This couple had a lodger, Oliver Lomas, aged 80. Robert Houghton, aged 20 and a stone mason, was a lodger with a Gaskell family on Cinnamon Brow so perhaps William had set up a new home.1

Birthcirca 1713England
NoteResearch: Again from the marriage date, William was probably born around 1710-1715. Between 1700 and 1721 there are only two local possibilities in the Wigan parish records, one in 1713 from Ashton with father Nicholas - perhaps an unlikely name for our Houghtons - and one in 1717 in Wigan, with father Charles; perhaps another unlikely name, and also rather young as this would make him only 18 at the time of a marriage to Ellen. The William from Wigan was baptised on 1 September 1717 in All Saints parish church; his father was Charles Houghton of (I think - the writing is not perfectly clear) Scholes. The William from Ashton was baptised on 16 August 1713 in St Thomas' parish church, Ashton in Makerfield; that would make him 22 at the time of his marriage to Ellen. Ashton is also on the same side of Wigan as Winstanley. There were other William Houghton baptisms further away, for example Winwick (1711) and Ormskirk (1709) so at this distance in time my choice is a best guess.1

The surname is not clear in William's record, where his father is described as (possibly) a "tanner". On Ellen and Ralph's records he is described as a labourer; Ann is recorded only on William and Ralph's entries, but these entries all clearly record the same family from Winstanley.

ResearchJohn Cooke: If William's father was Nicholas Houghton, living in Ashton, then we can push the line back further. Ashton was originally a chapelry of Winwick, and we need to examine the Winwick records as well as those for Wigan.
The Wigan parish church records show a Nicholas Houghton baptised on 28 March 1686, father William, with another baptised on 20 October 1689, also father William. It may be that the first Nicholas died in infancy, but I have not found a record of the death.1
