Retired head librarian in Swarthmore

Leanore H Perkins, 91, of Swarthmore, retired head librarian at the Swarthmore Public Library, died March 3 at Taylor Hospice in Ridley park.

Bornn in Philadelphia, Miss Perkins resided in Elkton, MD, before moving to Swarthmore in 1923. She grew up in a pre-Revolutionary home known as the Ogden House and graduated from Swarthmore High School in 1931. She earned a kindergarten teacher's certificate from Miss Illman's School.

In earlier years, Miss Perkins worked in various schools as a teacher's aide. During World War II, she worked at a nursery school in Glenolden and belonged to a Red Cross group in Swarthmore.

As the librarian at the Swarthmore Public Library, Miss Perkins conducted a weekly story hour for pre-school children. Fond of poetry and rhymes, she was a leader of the former Poet's Circle. She enjoyed letter writing and was a lifelong diarist, who enjoyed flowers, backyard birds, spectacular sunsets, and nature.

Miss Perkins was a member of Swarthmore Friends Meeting, where she often cared for children while their parents attended meeting on Sunday.

She loved mysteries, especially the more genteel variety by British authors. She was known for her gracious smile and kindly, patient manners.

Miss Perkins was the daughter of the late Joseph Hinchliffe Perkins, Sr and Mary Hartenstine Perkins. She was the sister of the late Joseph Hinchliffe Perkins, Jr and Virginia Perkins Cressman.

Survivors: Sister with whom she lived, Anne J Perkins, eight nieces and nephews; numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service: 3 pm Saturday, March 16, at Swarthmore Friends Meeting, Whittier Room, Swarthmore.

Burial: Eastlawn Cemetery, Ridley Township, was held privately.

Arrangements: Minshall-Shropshire Funeral Home, Middletown.

Virginia 'Jinny' Perkins Cressman, who grew up in Swarthmore, died on January 9 in Collingdale at the home she shared with her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Louise and Daniel Hickman. She was 84.

Mrs Cressman was the widow of the late Philip G Cressman. Born in 1917 in Elkton, MD, she was a daughter of Mary H and Joseph H Perkins, Sr. When she was six, she moved to Swarthmore where her family bought a pre-Revolutionary house known locally as Ogden House.

Mrs Cressman graduated in 1938 from Swarthmore High School and studied dressmaking for a year at a school in Philadelphia. In her teens, she was a counselor at Camp Sunshine, and occasionally worked as a waitress at the Inglenook Tea Room.

A Thanksgiving Eve Wedding-Beautiful Presents.
A large company gathered at the residence of Mr. Joseph Hinchliffe, corner of Bow ad High streets, on Wednesday evening last, Thanksgiving Eve, to witness the solemnization of the marriage ceremony between his only daughter, Salina E. and J. William Perkins, eldest son of Mr. John Perkins, of this town. Rev. John France, an uncle of the bride officiated. Miss Iola France, daughter of the
officiating clergy man and a cousin of the bride, acted as bridesmaid and Mr. William R. Witworth, as groomsman. The bride and groom, accompanied by the bridesmaid and groomsman and several other friends took the 9.10 train for Wilmington, their future home, Mr. Perkins being engaged in business there, but the main portion of the company did not retire until well on toward midnight.
