Sarah Howton Forker: He still owns family land that was originally Lewis Howton's. It has been passed down from generation to generation. Lewis's son Henry donated a small amount to Lafayette Church where the bulk of my family is buried (my mother included). Lafayette Church and cemetery is a small country church across from my dad's farm.¹

Civil War soldier from Wilson, New York. One of the 600+ men from Niagara County who lost their lives in the war.

Edward was born in Wilson in around 1841 to Hiram and Elizabeth Haughton. He grew up on the family farm on Chestnut road and attended a local schoolhouse. Not even two weeks after the attack on Fort Sumter started the Civil War, Edward enlisted with the 28th NY Infantry as a private. He served a total of 15 months before August 9, 1862, when his regiment fought at the Battle of Cedar Mountain. Here he was killed in the field, along with his friend Thomas Hill, also of Wilson, who was mortally wounded. His body was likely buried on the field and reinterred at Culpepper National Cemetery after the war as an unknown.
28th NY Infantry: HOUGHTON, EDWARD.—Age, 19 years. Enlisted, April 25, 1861, at Lockport, to serve two years; mustered in as private, Co. C, May 22,1861; killed, August 9, 1862, at Cedar Mountain, Va.
