His gr grandfather was a Robert Castaway Carson, an adopted Cherokee Indian. The story goes an elderly William Carson came across the abandoned baby while strolling down a path around 1795 in Jackson County, TN. He knew the young Cherokee couple who live just on the other side of Mathew Creek, knew she was pregnant and couldnt care for the infant. So he and his elderly wife raised Robert. They told him the story when he was twelve and allowed him to give himself a middle name at that time, so he called himself, "Castaway".¹
