Son, Thomas Jefferson Howton, told his daughter, Minnie Howton Dickerson, about living on Elm Creek at Owens. He said the Indians were friendly to them and after giving them some corn when they were hungry, they awoke one morning to find all the weeds pulled from their corn field-and many moccasins tracks there. Another time the children found rocks piled as markers along the way from Owens to Brownwood, so the Howton children would not lose their way riding horseback home from school.³

My grandfather, Bernard, was given a small house in Weld, Maine by his uncle James Bernard (5900). I now own the house. The house was built around 1920 and is where James Bernard lived for many years. His ancestor, James Houghton, Jr. (4049) was one of the first settlers of the town of Weld in the late 1700’s.¹
