BiographyPortrait and Biographical record of Toledo and Lucas, Wood Counties, Page 498
Albert S. Haughton owns and operates a good farm situated on section 24, Sylvania Township, Lucas
County. The homestead is mainly devoted to dairy purposes, and the neighboring city of Toledo affords
a ready market for milk and butter. A good grade of stock is kept on the place, and all the conveniences
of a model estate are to be found here. The success which has rewarded the efforts of Mr. Haughton is
largely due to his energy, though he was given a good start in life by his father.
Grandfather Lyman Haughton was born May 19, 1799, and died Jun 28, 1872. He came to Washington
Township, Lucas County, with three of his brothers, Stephen, Cyrus and Marvin, about the year 1833,
settling within a mile and a half of each other. A few years later the two other brothers, John and William
settled here. With the exception of a few years, Grandfather Haughton spent the remainder of his life on
the farm on which he first settled, which consisted of two hundred and eighty acres. He passed away at
the age of seventy-three years. Upon the organization of the Republican party he joined its ranks.
Stephen Haughton was one of the early physicians in this part of the state and practiced here for a
number of years, but later sold his farm of two hundred and forty acres and removed to Fulton County,
where he followed farming and also practiced medicine. He died at Wauseon, Fulton County, aged about
eighty-four years. The following is taken from records kept by Stephen Haughton: "Territory of Michigan
The 7th day of May I started with my family from Sand Lake, Rensselaer County, N.Y., for Michigan, and
landed at Detroit on the 19th day of the same month, in the year 1833."
Smith and Ann Eliza (Wiggins) Haughton, the parents of our subject, were natives of New York. The
mother was born May 6, 1827, and passed away December 4, 1857. The father, who was born February
11, 1821, and is therefore now (1895) seventy-four years of age, is the oldest person living bearing the
name of Haughton. He came to Ohio in the early '30s, and soon afterward settled in Lucas County. He
has for many years been considered one of the efficient and representative farmers of Washington
Township, where he owns some seventy acres of valuable land. His benefactions to those in need have
always been liberal. A man of noble and upright character, he is strictly conscientious in his dealings
with his fellow-men, and a progressive and liberal spirited citizen. In politics he affiliates with the
Republican party.
Four children were born to our subject's parents: Frances, Electa, Cecelia and Albert S. The three sisters
are all living in Washington Township. Our subject was born in Washington Township, Lucas County,
October 3, 1854, and was orphaned by his mother' death when he was but three years of age. His father
afterward married again.
April 15, 1877, Albert S. Haughton was united in marriage with Miss Minnie H. Barton, who was born in
this County November 8, 1856. She and her brother, William J., a resident of Washington Township, are
the only surviving children of Amos and Elizabeth (Snell) Barton, natives respectively of Pennsylvania
and England. Mr. and Mrs. Haughton are the parents of a daughter, Grace E., who was born December
22, 1885, and is now attending school. At the time of his marriage Mr. Haughton was given by his father
a tract of eighty acres lying in Fulton County, Ohio. Thither he moved and settling upon the place, gave
his attention to its cultivation for six years. He then disposed of the property.1

Deceased Name: William G. Bud Houghton
Coach William G. Bud Houghton, died Oct. 18, 2001, at the age of 92, in Sedona, Ariz.

He was born Nov. 14, 1908, in Mingo Jet, Ohio, educated in the Massillon, Ohio, school system, and graduated from Washington High School in 1928. He also graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1933 with a B.A. degree, and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Bud coached football and basketball and taught history in Massillon from 1933 to 1942. While the Massillon Tigers' head football coach, he took a leave of absence and entered the United States Navy and was commissioned as a lieutenant J.G. at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He was stationed at the Iowa Pre-Flight School in Iowa City, Iowa; naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Oak Harbor, Wash., and Naval Air State Pensacola, Pensacola, Fla. While in the service, he met and married his wife of 58 years, Mary Kay Fiebig of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They had two sons, Michael of Reno, Nev., and Bruce, deceased. After World War II, Coach Houghton returned to Massillon to reassume his position as head coach. He held that post until 1948, when he left Massillon to become head coach at the University of Akron, a position he held until 1952. Bud then retired from coaching and joined Snyder Brothers Motor Freight of Akron. He held a number of senior management positions until his retirement 25 years later. The last 10 years in retirement were spent in Sedona, Ariz.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Kay Houghton of Sedona, Ariz; son, Michael Houghton of Reno, Nev; grandchildren, Michael Houghton of Arlington Heights, Ill., Molly Johnson of Wilmington, N.C., Katie Houghton of Lawndale, Calif; and great-grandchildren, Michael Houghton II, Lindsey Houghton, Karissa Johnson, and Kennedy Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on what would have been his 93rd birthday, Nov. 14. The graveside service will be conducted at Rose Hill Memorial park, 3655 Wales Ave. N.W., Massillon. Family, friends, former students, and associates are invited to say goodbye. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to either the Sedona Humane Society, 2115 Shelby Dr., Sedona, Ariz. 86339, or to the Massillon Tiger Football Boosters, 1 Paul Brown Dr. S.E., Massillon, Ohio 44646.2

BiographyAkron, Summit Co., OH, USA, William G. “Bud” Houghton (The Legacy Lives On) 1941, 1946, 1947 Elwood “Kam” Kammer 1942, 1943, 1944 August “Augie Morningstar 1945
Many of the Massillon assistants went with Paul Brown to Ohio State. William G. “Bud” Houghton stayed behind with one year of varsity experience. He was a 1928 Massillon graduate and served as Head Coach at Longfellow Junior High School. Paul Brown endorsed him as Head Coach. His 1941 team experienced a 6-6 tie with Mansfield which broke a 33 game winning streak. The season ended with a 32-0 defeat of McKinley before 25,000 in Fawcett Stadium and a seventh straight State Championship.
Bud Houghton joined the Navy and was replaced by interim Coach Elwood “Kam” Kammer. The Tigers were 9-1 in 1942, losing to Canton McKinley in the final game. In 1943 the Tigers stormed through 10 opponents beating Canton McKinley 21-0 and winning the State Championship. “Kam” retired from coaching football after the 7-3 1944 season. His three year record was 24-4 (85.7%).He stayed as teacher and basketball coach.
Bud Houghton was still in the service so Massillon legend August “Augie” Morningstar was appointed the second interim coach. A football hero in Massillon High School and Purdue University “Augie” was loved by all Massillon fans. His 1945 team was undefeated. They were 5-0-5! Until Earle Bruce he was the only Massillon coach to have never lost a game. One of the ties (6-6) was played against Cleveland Cathedral Latin at Cleveland Municipal Stadium before 57,000 fans. Another tie was the final game with McKinley. Augie recalled that the game was to be at Canton so we loaned Canton our tarp to cover the field. When they went over to check the field at 8:00 AM game day they lifted a corner of the tarp and it was sopping wet beneath. They named the stadium Faucet stadium instead of Fawcett Stadium. After two plays the players were covered with mud on the quagmire field. The game ended in a 0-0 tie.
Bud Houghton returned in 1946. His 1946 and 1947 teams were 11-6-3. He was then selected as Akron University football coach. His record at Massillon was 21-6-3 (77.8%).
