--Houghton, Giles Mahlon (14 April 1916 – 1931)

Giles Mahlon Houghton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Houghton, was born in town of Alma, Jackson county, Wis. April 14, 1916.

In his early years he was a frail child, though during the later years he enjoyed better health and was becoming a joy to his parents as well as a great help to them about the home. Since he reached school age he attended the Houghtonburg school.

On Wednesday of last week he was taken ill, and Friday was taken to the Sacred Heart hospital, Eau Claire, where an appendicitis operation was performed. Altho (although) his condition was very critical from the first, yet the best of hope for his recovery was held, even to the last day. Monday afternoon he became much worse, followed by his passing out of this life to his reward at the age of 15 years 4 months and 10 days.

He leaves to mourn his parents and one sister, Leona, also his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. I. C. Houghton ** and Mr. Jacob Matti, and many other relatives: and a host of young friends.

Funeral services were held at the home Thursday afternoon at 1:30 and at the Reformed church at 2:00 o’clock, Rev. V. D. Weidler officiating. Many beautiful floral tributes were an expression of sympathy from sorrowing friends. Interment was in Houghtonburg cemetery.

**Additional Notes -Dates taken from burial records at Houghtonburg Cemetery, Jackson County, Wis; Grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. I. C. Houghton, were Ira Clarence Houghton and Emma (Levis).4

BiographyHOUGHTON, Walter Elsworth Sr. was born June 5, 1899 in La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin the son of Elmer Elsworth Houghton and Jane Erickson. His father Elmer was also a member of Euclid Lodge. He attended the public schools in La Crosse and graduated from the La Crosse High School in 1917. Following graduation he was employed as a driver for the Pasteurized Milk Company in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He was drafted into the Army when World War I broke out and trained as an aircraft mechanic at Fort Grant. After the war he went to work as a tool and die maker for the Stamping & Tool Company in La Crosse. About 1924 he went into partnership with Durward H. Lewis and they operated an automobile repair shop in La Crosse under the name Houghton & Lewis. He married Esther V. Gilmore about 1923 and they were the parents of a son, Walter Elsworth Jr. who was born in 1924. Esther was a nurse who cared for Tuberculosis patients and she died September 3, 1925 after contracting the disease. Walter moved to Naperville about 1926, following Esther’s death, leaving Walter Jr. in the care of his father and mother in La Crosse. He was reunited with his son when Elmer and Jane Houghton moved to Naperville in 1931. From the time Walter moved to Naperville and he was reunited with his son, he would drive up to La Crosse every other weekend to visit him. He took a course in Drafting through the International Correspondence School and was employed in Naperville at the Kroehler Furniture Manufacturing Company first as a designer, then as Supervisor of Drafting. Peter Kroehler, the founder of The Kroehler Furniture Manufacturing Company sent Walter to the Art Institute in Chicago to learn about furniture design. Walter was the supervisor of all draftsmen in the company when he retired after 39 years with Kroehlers. He married Mabel Irene Rau August 21, 1951 in Oak Park, Illinois, with his son Walter Jr. and Walter’s wife Rosalie (nee Moore) as witnesses. He was raised a Master Mason November 30, 1926 and served as Master of the Lodge in 1933 and 1934. His name is engraved in the back of the Oriental Chair that is situated in the East, a testament to the esteem he was held in by his employer at the time, Delmar Leroy Kroehler (also a member of the Lodge). He served as Treasurer of the Lodge for 40 years from 1935 thru 1974 and was also a member of Euclid Chapter No. 13, Royal Arch Masons and served as High Priest in 1931. He also served on the Naperville Masonic Temple Association board and was responsible for the installation of the first chair lift. He would often pick up and take home members of the Lodge who could no longer drive, so that they could continue to attend meetings. He died August 20, 1984 in Naperville, DuPage County, Illinois and was buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin.

IN MEMORIAM
Mrs. Louella Houghton

Louella, only daughter of John and Mary Ann Klinger (sic), was born in the township of Lancaster, Grant County, Wisconsin, November 27, 1876. Early in life she was left motherless. December 26, 1892, she was united in marriage to George L Houghton of Beetown. Together they made a home near the village, where they thereafter resided. To the union were born four children: daughters Birdie (Mrs. Archie Bass) and Stella (Mrs. John (sic) Foster); and two sons Leonis (sic) and Kenneth. Less than two years ago Mr. Houghton passed suddenly into the Great Beyond.

The stricken wife bravely took up the burden laid down, remaining on the farm, and with the young son, Kenneth, doing the best she could, until advancing disease forced her to seek medical aid. After weeks of suffering, she entered the J.C. Doolittle hospital at Lancaster and submitted to an operation which was thought to be successful. However, complications appeared and the beloved mother passed away in this city, October 7, 1930, aged 53 years, ten months and ten days.

With the sons and daughters who mourn, there are three grandchildren, one half-brother: Roy Klinger, Schullsburg; two half-sisters: Mrs. Clara Gibson, Arthur, and Mrs. Bessie Cook, South Dakota; all of her lamented husband's relatives and many friends.

Mrs. Houghton was a woman of a quiet, unobtrusive manner, the key- note of whose life was absolute unselfishness and service to others. With never a thought of self, her time and energies were expended on her family and home until, broken in health, she was obliged to retire from activity. Her heart was filled with kindness and of her it can truly be said she had no enemies. She was a faithful and active member of the Beetown camp of Royal Neighbors of America, and a consistent member of the Church of Latter Day Saints. She will be sadly missed in the community.

The sorrow of her passing was typified in the beautiful floral offerings and the immense crowd that gathered to pay the last tribute of respect. In the village church at Beetown, with Rev George Willett, Methodist Episcopalian minister of Lancaster, officiating, services were held with burial by the side of her husband in the village cemetery. The Royal Neighbors gave their beautiful ritual at the grave.4
