ObituaryHelen Marguerite Houghton
Helen was born November 15, 1918 in Sioux City,Iowa to Edward Levan Houghton and Elizabeth Annabelle Winkelpleck. She joined a sister, Betty Eileen, age one. Her parents were divorced in 1919.
In 1925 she was living in Florida with her father and his 2 nd wife, Etheal Palmer. Her father had joined the Klu Klux Klan, and Helen was their mascot. When her grandfather, Rev. Horace Houghton, learned of this, he went to Florida and spirited her away to Oklahoma to be raised by his sister, Bertha. Helen was happy there. She became an accomplished violinist, and was accepted to attend the prestigious Julliard School of Music - after she finished college. But, she left after her third year of college to go to Omaha, Nebraska to see her mother and sister— Never to return. It was there she met Ralph Stull, whom she married on November 29, 1941.
During WWII they lived in Seattle, Washington - where they had their first 3 children. Ralph was serving in the Army Transport Service in Alaska. After the war - in 1946, they moved to Fort Collins, Colorado where they had their 4th child. Next, they moved to Valparazo, Nebraska where Ralph was severely burned in a blow torch explosion - and, had to be taken to Omaha for skin grafting. The family stayed with Ralph's sister, Joy, during his recovery. While there, there daughter Penny came down with polio. Helen had the world on her shoulders, but had a great inner strength. She found a job there at a local bakery, at first, learning to use a 10 key adding machine by running her fingers across the picture of one at the library.
In 1949, the family moved into the one-bedroom house that Ralph was raised in. They then had their 5th child. Helen continued to work, and also sang with" The Sweet Adeline's " (sang barbershop harmony) In 1952, They moved into their own house. Helen continued to work. In 1959 she was chosen as Office Girl of the Year for all of Omaha.
In 1962 the family moved to California where Ralph's sister, Viola, lived. She and Ralph were divorced in 1969. She continued to work until she joined her daughters in Idaho in 1989— Where she lived until her death of cardiac arrest on October 25, 1998.
