ObituaryJun 18, 1979Brattleboro, Windham Co., VT, USA, George W. Houghton, 92, formerly of 78 Clark St., died Friday evening at Northampton (Mass.) Nursing Home, where he had been a patient since 1972. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Westerlund Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are this evening from 7 to 9. Mr. Houghton was bom in Townshend April 17, 1887, son of Fred G. and Julia A. (Johnston) Houghton, lor many years he was employed as an electrician for Horton-Walker, and later he had his own business. He also worked for the Recreation Department. He was a call fireman for the Brattleboro Fire Department and served as assistant chief. Later he was made honorary chief. On March 10, 1909, he married Hazel Howard, who died in 1924. In 1927, he married Carrie (Wilder) Prouty. She died in 1952. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Carlena Howe of Belchertown, Mass; two sons, Carl H. Houghton of Calais and Graydon C. Houghton of Clifton, N.J; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

ObituaryNov 13, 1967ADIN M HOUGHTON SPRINGFIELD - Adin M Houghton 82 died Sunday in Springfield Hospital where he had been a patient for over a month Mr Houghton was born September 13 1885 in Newfane son of George and Emma (Adams) Houghton He was a well-known merchant in the Springfield area and was active in many community affairs He was a charter member of the Springfield Lodge of Elks "" No 1560 and was the first president of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce He was associated with the Houghton-Simonds store in Springfield later known as Houghtons Inc His wife Alice M Houghton died in 1953 He is survived by a daughter Mrs Elwood W Simonds of Springfield: a sister Mrs Ada Hengst of Springfield a grandchild two greatgrandchildren nieces and nephewi Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 pm in the Davis the Rev Robert T Dick pastor of the Unitarian Universalist Church officiating Cremation will follow in Springfield Mass Friends may call at the Davis Chapel Monday from 7 to 9 pm where Elks memorial services will be held Monday at 7:30 pm In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Silver Towers Fund for retarded children in care of the Springfield Lodge of Elks
BiographyHe was educated in the public schools and by private tutors and took special courses at Goddard Seminary, Warre, VT. He was employed by James Gilbert in Williamsville and Townsend for 3 years. In 1905, with Houghton and Simmons Dry Goods Co., Brattleboro, VT. Since 1907, he managed a store of that firm in Springfield, VT. In 1904, he enlisted in Co. I, 1st VT Reg. and was in manuvers at Gretna Green, PA., in 1906. In 1905, he was at Mansassas, VA. His enlistment expired in 1907. A Republican and a Baptist. A member of the St. John's Lodge, #25, A.M. Skilchewang Chapter #25, R.A.M., and Springfield Council #18, R. & S. M.1

Houghton, 59, native of West Doyer, Vt, was held here tonight at the McKinson Streeter Funeral Home. Mr. Houghton, who died Monday in the Springfield Hospital, was the son of George H. and Nellie B (Cook) Houghton, Survivors include his wife, the former Jennie M. Locke; five sons, George H. and Leonard H, both of Springfield, Wesley M. of Florid. Paul E. of Montpelier, Vt, and Carroll, with the Army in Germany; his daughter, Mrs. Helen Burlock of Vergennes, Vt; four brothers, Edward T. and Harold M, both of Springfield and Byron E. and Leslie M, Harris.

ObituaryMay 3, 1974George B. Houghton WOLCOTT - George B. Houghton, 89, a resident here for nearly 70 years, died Thursday at the Morrisville Convalescent Center after a long illness. He was born in Charleston, June 21, 1884, son of Arthur and Alice (Brown) Houghton. . He married Eliza Hodgdon in Wolcott on March 14, 1908, For more than 40 years, he worked for the St. J. & L. C. Railroad, was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Maintenance and Ways and of the Wolcott Methodist Church, Besides his widow, he leaves three sons, Ralph, Passumpsic; Arden, Morrisville and Earl, Indian Orchard, Mass; four daughters, Mrs. Louva Hale and Mrs. Marion Ennis, St. John-sbury; Mrs. Mildred Martin and Mrs. Irma Christophero, Bristol, Conn; 26 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jesse Houghton, St. Johnsbury; two half-sisters, Mrs, Gladys Ellis, St. Johnsbury and Mrs. Marion Morency, New York and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p. m. in the Holcomg Funeral Home, Hardwick. The Rev. Albert Strobel will officiate. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery, Wolcott. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m.
