Sigler
On Saturday about 9 a.m. we lost a loved member of our community. John David Sigler was born in Chicago Ill. on 12-29-1933, and died 3-24-07. John David is survived by two brothers, one in Texas, and one in Denver, CO., and a large Horizons family. John came to Horizons in 1999, and has been apart of the Horizons family ever since. John David has touched many lives in this community, and the Horizons family. He had a contagious smile and laugh. You could not help but to smile back at him with a warm feeling in your heart. When those that worked with John were asked, what are your fondest memories of John David? They had these comments and more to say. John would like a cookie please? Everyone noticed his ear to ear grin on his face. He loved go for a ride in the Van. Root beer, chocolate milk and Peps, which was Cheerios before Cheerios was Cheerios. John David was up for just about anything. John would often ask for P-Bread, Most of those working with John you would have no idea what P-Bread was until another employee would explain- P-Bread was was peanut butter on bread or cheese bread. John David loved going to social events such as Christmas parties and plays. He enjoyed dancing and socializing. John enjoyed going for walks in the park, camping, swimming, and always participated in the Special Olympics. One person said I was privileged with being One person said I was privileged with being Johns Special Olympics coach. He loved the softball throw. While waiting for his team he would get excited and keep saying "John throw the ball far" and as always with a big grin on his face giggling. John David had a way of saying I love you, like no other person could. He gave the best cheek kisses in the world. John participated in activities with volunteers over the years. He has had an especially strong effect on a few of our younger volunteers. Faith, 11, Ashley, 13 and Nikki, 18, spent time with John the last few years doing many activities, like practicing his name and painting. Ashley would ask John to sing her a song and John would sing, "Home on the range, you are my sunshine, If your happy and you know it." Nikki remembers looking forward to going to the dances just to dance with John because he was so fun to dance with. Even with his disabilities he lived a full life.2

ResearchSigler: Amy was daughter of Israel Houghton, a cousin of Joel; Do you by any chance have that Joel Houghton's wife was Mary Emigh, whose family name was changed to Amey? I am pretty sure that was the case for her, since such a family did exist in Vermont, and I am trying to trace her down from Nicholas Amey (formerly Emigh).
I went to Putney, Windham, VT where Mary Amy/Amey/Emigh was from and found that there was a family, from Germany originally, living near the Houghton family of Ebemezer Houghton, whose ancestor was Nicholas Emigh. That name was changed from Emigh to Amey, and on line it is listed that way, as Amey/Emigh. There were several daughters named Mary, and I am trying to prove that one of them married Joel Houghton. Mary Amy Houghton, my husband's great-grandmother, was named after her grandmother, and I am already convinced that her last name was Amey or Emigh. Anyway, the Emigh's changed the spelling of their name to Amey in most cases. I found an Emigh forum and they supported that.8
NoteShe and Joel ended up in a poorhouse since their children were dead.

In the biography on Lorenzo Phinney:
"Oct. 20, 1831, he was married to his present companion, whose place of nativity was Maryland Township, Otsego Co., N.Y., time of birth April 15, 1809; her parents were Ebenezer and Margery (Bigelow) Houghton; to them were born eleven children, but five lived to be grown......Mrs. Phinney has two sisters, Emily, Mrs. Seth P. Duncan, in Oswego, N.Y., and Rebecca, Mrs. Isaac Blair, of this township; her parents died in this township, her father in 1857, mother in 1860."
In the biography of Isaac Blair:
"when he moved out, bringing with him his present wife, who is Rebecca Houghton, a native of Worcester, N.Y. , and was born Jan. 11, 1804; a daughter of Ebenezer and Margery (Bigelow) Houghton. Ebenezer was a son of Ebenezer. The father of Margery was named Joshua."

On 3/9/2002 Michele Norton of Akron, OH sent me a picture of the grave. It is a 4 sided marker. On one side is Ebenezer Houghton, on another Margrey Houghton, and on a third side Betsey Harrington. From the picture I know that the book was in error when it used ditto marks for the
last name Harrington. Also the date for Margrey(sic) is wrong. The picture shows Aug. 6, 1860 as the date of death not Feb. 6. Also the picture shows that it is 15 D and not 5 D as in the book. Working backwards with this info Margery's date of birth would be June 21, 1781, thus I make
the connection to Margery Bigelow born on June 21, 1781, daughter of Joshua Bigelow from the book by Howe, Bigelow Family in America. Further evidence is that Ebenezer Houghton and Joshua Bigelow the fathers can be found in the same counties in the 1790 and the 1800 census',
Westminster Co., Mass. and Otsego Co., NY respectfully. Upon my visit in 2005 I was able to verify all of this. From the 1850 census I know that a Betsey Harrington, 38 years old, was living with them and I suspect that she was a daughter. All indications now point to the fact that Laura
and Betsey were possibly twins. Also listed as living with them was Abagail Harrington, age 14, which I suspect is the daughter of Betsey.

Marriage Notes for Ebenezer Houghton and Margery Bigelow:
According to the book "History of Medina County and Ohio" published in 1881, eleven children were born of this union. Five lived to be grown.

GS: This is Margery Bigelow Houghton. It is a 4 sided marker. On one side is Ebenezer Houghton, on another Margrey Houghton, and on a third side Betsey Harrington.
