BiographyHarrington: The Kirby Records state that Levi Harrington was born in Danville, Vermont. As a boy, he lived with his father in Kirby. Proof that he married the widow of Amos Colburn is found in the probate of that estate. In 1830 the widow Ruth Colburn was appointed guardian of her six minor children. On 18Ap1832 Isaiah Carpenter was appointed guardian of these same children because the 'former guardian having married and thereby become incapable of performing said trust'. The same day Ruth Colburn, as executrix of the estate of Amos Colburn, sold to Levi Harrington the land and buildings that Amos Colburn of Lebanon, NH. had bought 13S1813. On 20 Apr 1832, Levi S. Harrington acknowledged this sale 'for Ruth my Wife'. Levi sold the Colburn estate in Waterford 5Je1832 but was still living in Waterford on 29N1832 when he bought land in Kirby of his brother Antipas. Soon after, he moved back to Kirby and settled on a farm located in 'Mud Hollow'. Here he lived until his death. His name appears in the Kirby land records at least once each 10 years; the last time, 19Ag1873, when he and his wife Mary deeded the home place to their son Myron O. Harrington, who sold it 10D1873. The house, said to have been built by Levi was still standing in Nov 1939 although unoccupied for several years. Jeffrey says, 'In the early settlement of Kirby, there were many men and women who were prominent in its development, the families of whom are gone from us and we are unable to write a suitable sketch of their work. Among these are Ebenezer Damon, Josiah Joslin, Levi Harrington, Benjamin Nutter and others, all of whom represented Kirby in the Legislature of this State'. In 1832 Levi owned pew No. 11 in the Congregational Meeting House in Kirby. This church was organized in 1812 but had no regular pastor until 1824 when Rev. Luther Wood joined and preached until old age prevented. In 1828 the church erected a comfortable house of worship which had 45 members in 1840. About this time, a new church was organized in East St. Johnsbury, to which a part of the Kirby members transferred their membership, leaving the Kirby church in feeble condition. The building was repaired in 1885 and the next year had 27 members. Levi Harrington died in Kirby in 1873 at the age of 65 and is buried in the Kirby cemetery. A marble stone gives the date and age and the dates of the death of both wives. The St. Johnsbury Caledonian of 3 Oct1873 has the following obituary: 'In Kirby, 30S.,Levis S. Harrington, aged65. A great sufferer gone to rest in the bosom of his Savior'. His widow Adeline died in 1894, aged 81y.10m.18d., Guildhall, Vt.
