BiographyNotes on Leland Houghton (sources - History of Will County, IL, and History of Iroquois Co., IL.)
“In the fall of 1845, Leland Houghton, his wife and three children, Franklin, Olive and Herrick; a brother Rudolphus and family; parents Darius and Almira Houghton, all came by way of the Great Lakes to Chicago, Illinois. But, as Capt.(?) Houghton put it, he did not want to locate to that “mud-hole.” He moved to a farm in Wheatland township, Will County, IL, near Aurora, IL, remaining there nine years, removing to Rochville IL. In 1874 they came to Gilman, IL, remaining there for the rest of their lives. In the History of Will County, it states that Leland Houghton came to Wheatland Township in 1845, settled in the Northwest part of the township known as the Vermont Settlement. In 1874, he and his family moved to Gilman, Illinois, remaining there the rest of his life.”

Brandt: Vital records of Roxbury VT show him there on a list of jurors, Feb 18, 1835; he was a hay waver Feb 10, 1840; was first constable Mar 1, 1842; was one of the trustees of the Surplus Money, Feb 15, 1843; was town agent Mar 12, 1844; also a petit juror. He was a Whig, but when the Republican party was formed in IL, he joined the party. He had 5 children, the last dying in infancy.9,2

NewspaperApr 29, 1836North River Times, North River, NY, USA, Steaming to Death. Col. Lucius Houghton, of Montpelier, Vt., who was slightly indisposed, employed one of the abominable quacks that are scouring the country, to cure him. The quack’s name is Wright , and the way he cured Col. Houghton is a caution all over. He confined him in a close box, and turned upon him a force of steam sufficient to propel the North America. After the elapse of an hour, he raised the safety-valve and uncovered the box, where he found his patient so thoroughly cured, as to be not only relieved from pain, but also ready to dispense with the Doctor's invaluable services, being to all intents and purposes, as dead as a roasted sprat. The Doctor expressed a great regret that the Col. could not have lived to try a dose of lobelia syrup and elder-bark tea. These, with a little hotdrops, he was quite sure would have cured him. When we see people who have been born and reared in an enlightened and civilized country, so consummately stupid as to sacrifice their health, and place their very lives at the mercy of itinerant murderers and vagabonds, we marvel not that those of a less favored land should voluntarily expire by the funeral torch, or throw their bodies beneath the wheels of Juggernaut. Before we attempt to enlighten the heathen and christianize other countries, we had best cast the beam from our own eyes, and free our country from the horde of blood-sucking quacks that are cowing disease and death every where among us.
