ResearchJohn Thomas Houghton      b 14.12.1834 @ London (in dispute)
d 29. 6.1907 @ Sydney
m 25. 1.1859 @ Sydney

(Much research has also been done by Marie Buckingham of 18 Farrington St. Alderley Brisbane Q4051, and results have been included in this document.)

Origins:

The place of birth and his parentage varies according to the document consulted. Much more research is required to solve the problem and this is continuing. The documents consulted and their salient points are ;-

(a) His marriage certificate shows his birthplace as England, his father as William Houghton, his mother as Mary Spencer, his age as 24, and his occupation as mariner. The marriage took place in St. James' Church Sydney according to the rites of the Church of England.

(b) On the birth certificate of his daughter Mary Jane Houghton [b 5.11.1859] his birthplace is shown as London, his age as 25, and his occupation as mariner. The birth took place at Liverpool St. Sydney and the informant was the mother Catherine Houghton. Previous issue is shown as nil.

(c) On the birth certificate of his son John Downie Houghton [b 27.1.1863] his birthplace is shown as London England, his age as 29, and his occupation as master mariner. The informant was 'John Thomas Houghton, Master Mariner, Bowen, Port Denison.' The issue, all living, is shown as four. Two of these would be William and Margaret, his wife Catherine's two children to her first marriage to Stephen Nugent. The third would be Mary Jane, but is the fourth the newly arrived John Downie, or another child? If it is Kate, then later certificates have the year of her birth wrong.

(d) On the birth certificate of his son Thomas Henry Houghton at Cape River [b 30.3.1868, the first of two boys given that name], his birthplace is given as Smithfield United States, his age as 34, and his occupation as mariner. There are five previous children shown living, viz. William, Margaret, Mary Jane, John Downie and Kate Downie. The informant is again John Thomas Houghton.

(e) On the birth certificate of his daughter Lilian Granville Houghton at Capeville Cape River [b 15.11.1880], his birthplace is shown as Smithfield Rhode Island U.S.America, his age as 45, and his occupation as storekeeper. Previous issue is shown as six living, viz. Mary Jane 21, John Downie 18, Kate Downie 16, Thomas Henry 11, Rose Gilchrist 8, Clara Valentine 5, and two dead, a male and a female. The informant is again John Thomas Houghton, and he is also the Registrar for births, deaths and marriages for the district. The two children who died were the first Thomas Henry [1868-1869] and Teresa Agnes [1877-1879].

(f) The registration of Kate Downie Houghton's birth has not yet been located. Kate's marriage certificate [m 25.1.1887] says she was born at Bowen and was 22, which, when matched with item e above, puts her date of birth between 25th January 1864 and 15th November 1864. Possibly there could have been some slip-up and her birth not registered? (See also the comment at the end of item c above).

(g) John Thomas Houghton's 1907 death certificate details were supplied by his son John Downie who said he was born at Stonington North America and that John Thomas's parents were John Thomas Houghton and Sarah Granville. Stonington was the name J.T.H. gave to the cattle property he established on the Cape River. The death certificate detail indicates that he arrived in Australia in 1857 at the age of 22. Death certificate detail always depends on the informant's perceptions and is less certain to be accurate than other registrations.

(h) The 1992 IGI for London England lists the baptism of a John Thomas Houghton at St. Leonard's Shoreditch on 5.1.1835, with parents William and Mary Houghton. The date of birth was 14th December 1834 and William's occupation was that of bricklayer. It could well be 'our' John Thomas Houghton but this has yet to be proved. A William and Mary Houghton with three children - James aged 15, Jane aged 10 and John aged 7 - were living in Shoreditch at the 1841 census. By the 1851 census William and Mary were living alone.

(i) Granville is used as a second Christian name for one of his daughters [b 1880], for a grandson [b 1900], and for a daughter [b 1891] of his step-daughter Margaret which does suggest some sort of a link to a Sarah Granville.

(j) Spencer is used as a second Christian name for a grandson [b c.1904] of his step-daughter Margaret but this link could well be from the other family lines. Once again, this is only speculation about any link.

(k) Another child listed on the IGI for the early 1830s to parents William and Mary Houghton was Jane, baptised on 2.4.1832 at St. Leonard's Shoreditch. She was born on 10.3.1832, and at the time William and Mary were living at Hoxton and William's occupation was that of carman.

(l) The IGI on CD (and therefore post-1992) when checked in 1996 showed a William Houghton marrying a Sarah (no surname) in 'Kent England about 1830'. No further research has yet been made along this thread.

(m) The 1992 IGI for London do not show either a Houghton-Mary Spencer marriage or a Houghton-Sarah Granville one. Searchings in other areas in England and the USA have also been unsuccessful.

(n) The crew records for the arrivals of the Jeanie Dove in Sydney from 1859 to 1861 show the following :-
