ObituarySep 24, 1964ARIEL HOUGHTON
SHEFFIELD - Miss Ariel Houghton, 94, of Barnes, died at 1:15 p. m. Sept. 23, 1964, in the Rouse Home in Youngsville, where she had been a resident since 1959. She had been ill for the last three months and in serious condition for six weeks. Miss Houghton was born in Barnes on April 20, 1870, the daughter of William H. and Martha Dixon Houghton. Her paternal grandfather, Hiram Houghton, her maternal grandfather, Eliel Dixon, and her father were all veterans of Civil War service. A Sons of GAR Veterans Post was named for her Grandfather Houghton, also.
A graduate of Lock Haven Normal School in 1894, Miss Houghton taught school in Henry’s Mills and Sheffield in her earlier years and served in a similar capacity in Barnes for 22 years prior to her retirement. She was a member of Barnes Methodist Church and its WSCS and had been superintendent of its Sunday School. She was an honorary member of Sheffield Garden Club and secretary of Barnes Cemetery Association.
Maintaining a public library in her home for a number of years, she was the first and only public librarian that community ever had. Another of her activities was service as a judge of elections, an office to which she was elected for many years on the Republican ticket.
Her only near survivors are a number of cousins.
ResearchPer Joe Stout, she had diary of grandfather Hiram T. Houghton, covering 1854-1884; she made 19 handcopied copies

RetirementMarvil Barnes:
Friday, July 30

The Renewal Department will lose one of its most loved co-workers when MM VIL B M NES retires to a bright new world of leisure and travel that is opening up to her.

Marvil was born in Barnes, Pennsylvania, a town named in honor of her family. She received her education and business training in the East. This qualified her to enter into her position of Recorder when her family moved to Los Angeles and she started her career with Pacific Mutual on July 1, 1920. She has been in charge of the Recording Section in the Renewal Department and has devoted her energies and abilities to helping many new employees over their first hurdles, thusleaving a host of friends.

When she leaves here she plans to make an extended visit "in the old home town". She will enjoy renewing acquaintance with her many friends and relatives.

When the leaves turn red Marvl1 will be found motoring leisurely through many states including Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky and the New England States. She will eventually travel on into Canada accompanied by her sister, Myrna and her brother-in-law. True to form, they will unerringly find the quaint hideaway for the enjoyment of many a fine dinner for Marvil is noted as a connoisseur of foods.

While travel lures Marvil to far places, after all her home is her first love, and after her tour, the enjoyment of her family, especially her niece and nephew, children of Dr. and Mrs. Stout of Pasadena, will draw her back to Southern California, and to her Pacific Mutual friends and new activities her leisure time will make possible.

Take with you our best wishes for much happiness in the future, Marvil, and remember that we shall miss you6'
DeathJan 29, 1948Watts, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA, USA1
BurialForest Lawn Cemetery, Glendale, Los Angeles Co., CA, USA5
NoteThe children of this marriage all left for California about 1900 to work in the oilfields, while Marvil Houghton Barnes stayed in Barnes until about 1913, when she moves to Los Angeles to be with her children.5
