Biographyde Hoghton Pedigree I: "Sir Richard Hoghton, 3rd Bart., d. 1678. m. Sarah dau. Philip Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield. Sheriff of Lancashire 1658. M.P. 1646 and 1656. Steward of Royal forests and lands in Lancs. and Yorks. 1644. Gentleman of King Charles II's bedchamber."

de Hoghton Pedigree II: "Sir Richard Hoghton, Bart., who succeeded his father in the title and the estate, was elected knight of the shire for the county of Lancaster, in the reign of King Charles 2, and departed this life February, 1677-8. Of him it was said "that the country has lost a good patriot; the gentry an eminent person in their number; the poor neighbourhood a constant and charitable supporter; his friends an hospitable reciever; kindred an honourable and respected relation; servants have lost a good master; children an indulgent father; an honourable and virtous lady a dear consort."

JWH: "Sir Richard, the third Baronet...died in February, 1768. Dr. Seth Bushnell preached his funeral sermon at Preston, and gave the following character of him: ' It had well pleased Almighty God by a sudden stroke, to make a sad breach in a worthy family, in taking away the chief head therof; a person of great worth and honour, of an honorable extraction, of a generous disposition, and of a courteous, kind and affable temper, whose high degree was so seasoned with an humble carriage towards all inferiors, as laid upon them a just obligation for ture honor and service. He was free and hospitable in the entertainment of his friends, and most pleasd with their kind and cheerful visits. His comportments at home and abroad weere like himself, ever speaking a generous and worthy mind, and suitable to that eminency of interest and repute, which upon just accounts he held in his country. Twas his great and deserved commendation that he was free from those vices which are the grand stains of true honor: I mean intemperance, debaucheries, revellings, dissolute practices, profligate courses and the like; in a word, I may truly say that the country has lost a good patriot, the gentry an eminent person in their number, the poor of the neighborhood a constant and charitable supporter, his friends an hospitable reciever, kindred an honorable and respective relation; servants have lost a good master, children an indulgent father, and honorable and virtuous lady, a dear consort.' ' Sir Richard was elected a Knight of the Shire in the reigh of Charles II. He married Lady Sarah, daughter of the Right Honorable Philip Stanhope, first Earl of Chesterfield, and had issue by her, six sons and five daughters."

p. 31: "sat in Parliament for County Lancaster."

Hoghton Tower: Sheriff of Lancashire 1658. Member of parliament 1646 and 1656. Steward of Royal forests and lands in Lancashire and Yorkshire 1644. Gentlemen of King Charles II's bedchamber. Dedicated improver of lands.

Bernard de Hoghton: The 3rd Baronet Richard, a Parlimentarian, fought his Royalist father. Richard was second in command under General Lord Fairfax.

Wikepedia: Sir Richard Hoghton, 3rd Baronet (c 1616 -3 February 1678) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1640 and 1656. He supported the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War.

Hoghton was the eldest son of Sir Gilbert Hoghton, 2nd Baronet .

In 1645, Hoghton was elected Member of Parliament for Lancashire in the Long Parliament. Unlike his Royalist father, he was a zealous supporrter of parliament and a firm adherent of the Presbyterian cause. He succeeded his father in the baronetcy in April 1647. In 1656 he was re-elected MP for Lancashire in the Second Protectorate Parliament.

After the restoration Hoghton was a patron of nonconformist ejected ministers.8,5,9,3,4
