He was a hardware merchant and first invested in glassmaking in 1851, by buying an interest in Cate & Phillips, a small glass firm in Somerville, MA. Three years later he organized the Union Glass Company, which incorporated on Jan. 21, 1854. Amory owned thow-thirs of the company and served as treasurer, Francis Houghton was president and owned one-sixth.
In Oct. 1864, he sold his interest in Union Glass and purchased the Brooklyn Flint Glass Works. He moved to Brooklyn NY. On Dec. 3, 1866 a fire destroyed the plant. They rebuilt the works. Amory was the titular head of the company but by 1867, his wife Sophronia Oakes owned the company, having assumed its debts. In May 1868, the company moved to Corning NY and the Corning Flint Glass Works began manufacturing on Oct. 22, 1868. By Sep. 1870, it went into bankruptcy.13

BiographyHakes, Landmarks of Steuben Co., p. 27: The Corning Glass Works was established in 1868 by Amory Houghton Sr, Josiah Oates, George Bradford, and Amory Houghton Jr. The village of Corning took $50,000 of stock to remove Brooklyn Flint Glass Works and the company took $75,000. The new Corning Flint Glass Company had heavy loss in business for 3 years and in 1871 disposed of the local plant. It was purchased by Nathan Cushing of Boston, with Amory Houghton Jr in charge as manager. In 1872 Amory Houghton Jr purchased it and became the sole proprietor. In 1875 the Corning Glass Works was incorporated with Amory Jr as president and treasurer and his brother Charles F. Houghton as the vice president. The Works covered 2 acres and employed 4000 people.

p. 62-64: " Amory Houghton, Sr., founder of the glass industry in Corning, N. Y., and for several years a resident of the village, was a native of Bolton, Mass., born August 26, 1813, and was the ninth of thirteen children of Rufus and Abigail (Barnard) Houghton. Rufus Houghton was the son of Jonathan Houghton, who was also a native of Bolton, and who served with much credit as a soldier in the American army during the Revolutionary War. Jonathan, the soldier, was the son of Jonathan, of Lancaster, Mass., while the latter was the son of John, the Emigrant, who was born in 1661, and died April 29, 1684. (The Houghtons of New England were descended from Norman stock, and their ancestors went into England with William the Conqueror, A. D. 1066, and settled in Lancashire.) [CJV: unproved]
The early life of our subject, Amory Houghton, was spent on his father's farm but at the age of twelve years he went to Lancaster, four miles from Bolton, where he attended school, and did chores for his board and tuition. After a year he returned home but soon went to Cambridge, Mass., and was apprenticed to Richardson & Houghton, to learn the joiner's trade. Had he served his entire apprenticeship, young Houghton would have reached his majority about the end of the term, but about eighteen months before the term was ended he "purchased his time" from his masters at the rate of eight Yankee shillings per day. He then borrowed a few hundred dollars and began business as contractor and builder in and near Cambridge. For a young man not yet twenty-one his operations were looked upon as somewhat hazardous, and the gentleman from whom he had borrowed became anxious for the safety of his loan; but when he requested its return it was promptly paid, as were all obligations when due. So successful, indeed, was this early period of his business life that before Amory Houghton was twenty-three years old he had saved three thousand dollars, and owed nothing.
Notwithstanding his success as contracting builder, he soon made a change. In 1836 he rented a wharf in East Cambridge, Mass., and began the sale of coal, wood, bark, hay, lime, cement, and other commodities, beginning in a small way but gradually increasing his stock as trade required until he became proprietor of a large and profitable business. About the year 1851 and Englishman (Gaffer Teasdale), who was an experienced glass factory manager, pointed out to him the possible profits of a well conducted glass industry, and the result was that in 1852 Amory Houghton sold out his wharf business and established the Union Glass Company at Somerville, near Boston, Mass. It was to him wholly a new business, yet the qualities of the man were such that he made it successful. However, in 1864, he sold the plant and moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. In this sale Mr. Houghton evidently made a mistake; not, however, from a business point of view, but as the result of an unfortunate train of circumstances which no man could foresee or avoid. Yet this very mistake, if such it really was, proved of the greatest benefit to Corning, for without it the splendid industry which has made the city famous would never have been founded there. As soon as he had completed the sale of the Union Glass Company, he bought out and reorganized the Brooklyn Flint Glass Company, incorporated the new stockholders being Amory Houghton, Josiah Oakes, George P. Bradford and Amory Houghton, jr. Soon after the company began operations labor troubles arose, which, in connection with other embarrassing complications, made the business unprofitable, and at the end of four years the works were removed to Corning, N.Y., in the belief that cheaper coal and more desirable surroundings would re-establish it upon a paying basis, and at the same time add materially to the commercial importance of the village. Before the removal the Corning Flint Glass Company was organized, of which Amory Houghton, sr., was president, and, in fact, manager.
The results anticipated by the removal were not at first realized. Direct competition with the large and cheaply operated glass factories of Pittsburgh and other central cities of Pennsylvania worked to the disadvantage of the local industry, and the result was heavy losses to the stockholders. In fact, the effort to maintain the works in Brooklyn, and still later re-establish them in Corning, cost Amory Houghton his fortune. The plant was sold in 1871 to Nathan Cushing of Boston, and by him was placed under the management of Amory Houghton, jr., now president and treasurer of the Corning Glass Works, and under whose immediate direction and control they have become famous throughout the country for the superior quality and great variety of their product.
In 1871 Amory Houghton, sr., left Corning and retired to his farm in Northcastle, Westchester, county, N.Y. In 1875 he returned to Brooklyn and with characteristic determination undertook to rebuild and change the Brooklyn Flint Glass Works of former years into the Brooklyn Steam Power Works. In this undertaking his efforts were rewarded with only partial success; and while engaged in this business Mr. Houghton was taken il, and died February 20, 1882.
Looking back over the life of Amory Houghton, we discover a record of business activity covering a period of more than half a century; a record of successes and misfortunes, yet, through all this period of varying fortunes, his strong individual characteristics were ever discernible. Determination of character was his prominent trait. This served him well, as his business life was begun under adverse conditions. He often felt the need of a thorough education in his early career, but he learned by observation and experience what the schools never offered, and in conversation, in business consultation, or in whatever associations he chanced to be place, Mr. Houghton was always the same agreeable, entertaining and intelligent companion, loving and devoted to his family and loyal to his friends. His wife, who preceded him to the grave by only two years, was Sophronia Mann Oakes, daughter of Josiah Oakes, who has a great admirer of the noted Horace Mann, for whom he named his daughter. She was born February 18, 1814, and died March 19, 1880. They were married October 5,1836, and to them seven children were born: Amory, jr., of Corning; Caroline Sophronia, who died at the age of five years; Katharine Sophronia; Charles Frederic, of Corning; Alfred Augustus, a successful business man of Buffalo, who died October 28, 1892; Ellen Maria, wife of George L. Abbott of Corning; and Annie Frances (deceased), who married William A. Tuttle of Buffalo.
From boyhood to the time of his death Amory Houghton was a member of the Congregational church. He gave generously to the support of the church and to all worthy causes, and no deserving charity ever left him empty handed. He was not active in politics, although a close observer and careful reader of all that took place in National and State affairs."

B. Leaming, p. 9: Two years later [1868], Fred was next in line to work at the family's new factory in Corning when his father intervened. Amory, Sr. was a rich man now, but he had started poor as a carpenter's apprentice. Dressed in rags, with dirt on his face and under his fingernails, he had often watched the rich boys at Harvard and dreamed of what it would be like to have their advantages. Now, to show how far the Houghtons had come, he announced plans to send his eighteen year-old youngest son [Fred] to Harvard....That spring [1869]... his father's business failed. The new factory in Corning proved too expensive to operate. In September 1870, a court placed the Corning Flint Glass Works in receivership. Nathan Cushing, a Boston businessman, swooped in to buy the bankrupt factory. Amory Houghton, Sr. was ruined..."

Corning’s enterprising spirit is our founder’s legacy.
Amory Houghton was a talented and ambitious man who sought and seized opportunity. Just into his 20’s, he embarked on his first business venture, establishing his own contracting business after a successful apprenticeship as a carpenter and builder. In the following years, Houghton dabbled in real estate and trading, which eventually led to a wharf in Cambridge where he traded coal, wood and other materials. He pursued this until shortly after 1851 when a chance meeting with British glassmaker “Gaffer” Teasdale inspired him to see his future in glass.
Houghton’s ownership in the small glass companies Cate & Phillip (later called Bay State Glass) and the Union Glass Works led to his eventual purchase of the Brooklyn Flint Glass Works in Brooklyn, NY. By this time, Houghton’s oldest son, Amory Jr. (1837 – 1909), was involved in the family business and the idea of moving upstate -- where materials and real estate were cheaper -- was taking shape. In 1868, a small-town banker with big ideas approached Houghton with a plan. Soon after, Houghton moved his company to Corning, NY and changed the company’s name to reflect its new home.
Houghton left the business in 1870, and retired to his farm in Westchester County. He eventually returned to his home in Brooklyn, where he died in 1882 at the age of 70.

NotableAmory Houghton (1812-) bought a glass company in Brooklyn NY in 1864, and moved it to Corning NY in 1864. His sons, Amory Jr. (1837-1909) and Charles (1846-1897), made Corning Glass Company a success. They developed the tradition of scientific inquiry and the creation of specialty glass products. Amory Jr's two sons, Alanson (1863-1941) and Arthur (1866-1928) founded the company's research laboratory and created automation to the lightbulb and glass tubing manufacturing. Alanson's son Amory ((1899-1981) and his couson Arthur Jr (1906-1990) lead the company through the Depression and into the postwar era. Amory Houghton's sons, Amory Jr. (1926-) and James R. Houghton (1936-) lead the company from the 1960s to the 1990s, particularly in the developments in ceramics, fiber optics, and photonic components. Corning first sold public stock in 1945. The Houghton family owned only 5 percent of the company in 2001.
They specialized in specialty glass, first with railroad signal glass, first practical glass bulb for Edison's electric lamp (blown glass bulbs for Thomas Edison), to Pyrex and Corning Ware heat-resistant dishes, mass production of glass, casting of the 200-inch Hubble telescope mirror, TV picture tube bulbs, to optical fibers, and computer plasma screens.25
