Biography

"graduated at Amherst College in 1831 and Andover Theological Seminary in 1834; m Nov. 17, 1834, Anna Davis. They sailed with five othe missionaries and their wives from Boston to South Africa, Dec. 3, 1834, where she d. in 1836. He m. (2) Charlotte Bailey. In 1838, the mission being broken up, he returned to the Unitied States; but with undaunted courage he sailed for Natal, South Africa, in 1840, remaining for thirty years in the Zulu mission. In 1870, at the age of sixty-seven, he retired from the work and spent the remainder of his life in Springfield, Mass., where he died Feb. 12, 1894, being the last of the six men who had started to Africa together in 1834. It is a custom among the Zulus, when a friend leaves them not to return, to present him with what is called 'grave money,' to be used in procuring a suitable burial. When Mr. and Mrs. Grout returned to Natal in 1870, such a gift was made him by the Zulus of Umvoti. This sum was sufficient to meet the funeral expenses of Mr. Grout and also erect the plain marble shaft which marks his grave in the beautiful cemetery at Springfield."²
