Biography

"Early left an orphan [CJV: parents died in 1853] he was carefully bought up by his grandmother, Mrs. Sarah E. Pickering. Was educated in the schools of Malden, Mass; graduated in 1864. He started in business in a retail cloak store in which he served some eight months, sweeping store and doing errands. In July, 1865, at the age of seventeen, he entered the employment of the Magee Furnace Co., with which he has been connected ever since. Rising step by step in the mastery of the business he took charge of the establishment in 1875, after ten year's service, and became treasurer in 1876, which position he still holds. He has been connected with many business enterprises: was president of the Chicago and Ohio River R.R. from 1890 to 1892, having previously been one of the committee of reorganization, and vice-president, from 1885 to 1890, of the Connotton Valley R. R. He m. 6, 18, 1871. Sarah Bartlett Emmons. In 1892 he gave, as treasurer of the Magee Co., the land for a site for the erection of a library building in memory of his son, Fredrick E. Parlin."⁶

Lewiston, ME, USA, ORR'S ISLAND - Clyde R Houghton. 81, formerly of Auburn, died Monday afternoon¹at his home here. He was born in Turner, Nov. 5, 1888. the son of Ira W. and Elizabeth Russell Houghton He attended schools in Lewiston and Auburn and had lived in Auburn for 25 years before coming to Orr’s Island in 1936. Mr. Houghton had been employed for 28 years by J. A. Greenleaf and Son as yard foreman. He served as fire chief of the Orr's Island Fire Dept, for 14 years. Mr Houghton was a member of the Maine and New England Fire Chiefs’ Assn and was past president of the Orr’s and Bailey Island PTA. Surviving are his widow. Mrs. Susan Graves Houghton who he married 59 years ago June 14: a son. Chief Master Sgt. Russell G. of Albuquerque, N.M.: two daughters. Miss Pauline Houghton. Orr’s Tsland. and Mrs. Caroline Hill. East Hampstead, Nil : a brother Guv F. of Auburn: and three grandchildren.
