ObituaryNov 20, 1954The Oklahoman, 20 Nov 1954, page 5.
DECEASED CITY FINANCIER HAD COLORFUL LIFE
Harry B. Houghton, 78 , who died Friday at St. Anthony hospital from injuries he suffered in a fall at
his home, 600 N.E. 15, was one of Oklahoma City's colorful, and most successful business leaders.
He lost a fortune drilling dry holes while (illegible) drilling for oil in Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana, but
he made another one when he sank 42 producing wells in Oklahoma City oilfield.
In between the two, he founded the National Aide Life Insurance Company here with only $1, 000.00
and built it into the state's largest insurance Corporation.
Insurance Firm Sold
Houghton sold his insurance company in 1945 and retired for one week. Unable to stay idle, he formed
the Houghton Investment Company, opened offices in the Kerr McGee building and continued as financier
until his death.
Friday afternoon Houghton walked into an elevator shaft at his home, falling from the first floor to the basement. He was taken to St. Anthony hospital where he died three hours later of multiple injuries without
regaining consciousness.
His wife Jeanie, said he had "been feeling fine." until the accident. The new elevator was put into operation last week in a two story and basement home.
Born 15 Jan 1876, in Hughesville Pa. Houghton first came in (several words illegible) Oklahoma City in 1889
when he was 13 years of age. He worked for one year in a cafe owned by his brother Elmer Houghton,
returning to Pennsylvania in 1890.
In 1902, after learning the clothing business at Hughesville, Houghton came back to Oklahoma City and started a clothing store here, which soon became the largest one in Oklahoma City.
He sold the clothing store firm in 1910 and began drilling oil, only a few of his first 52 wells produced and in
1921, down to $1000.00 again, he founded the insurance firm. In the late 20's when the Oklahoma City
field blew in, Houghton purchased land, royalty and leases and recouped many times his earlier losses in oil.
WIFE DIES IN CRASH
Houghton's first wife died in an automobile accident here in 1935. Their only son, Leonard N. Houghton,
who was secretary of National Aide Life Insurance, died here in 1951.
The pioneer business leader and his present wife was married 11 Feb 1939. Also surviving are two
sister's, Mrs. H.J. Adkin and Miss Annie Houghton, both of 2648 N. W. 24.
Houghton was a 32nd. degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite (three words illegible) Elks and Odd
Fellows. He was a former deacon of the First Christian Church, a member of the Son's Of American
Revolution, the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club and active member of the Chamber Of Commerce.
Services are pending at the Hann-Cook funeral home.19

BiographyCopyright©2010 Nancy Ladd. All rights reserved: He was the first Revol. War Centennial baby born in PA. Harry grew up in Hughesville, PA. He made a fortune by age 36, lost it by age 46, and then in the next 25 year became one of the richest men in OK. He stood 5' 4" inches tall. He was in the clothing business a number of years, was the owner of the National Life Assurance Company at 3rd and Broadway in Oklahoma City, was a private investor and made a tremendous amount of money from the rich Oklahoma City oil fields. Harry owned the first privately owned airplane in Oklahoma City.

Nancy Ladd: Harry Bittenbinder Houghton was born January 15, 1876, in Hughesville, Pennsylvania (Lycoming County), to John Houghton and Fannie Kocher. Harry was the first Centennial baby born in the state of Pennsylvania after the Revolutionary War and he received statewide honors at a celebration held in Philadelphia. His great-grandfather fought under George Washington in the Revolutionary War and Harry had justifiable pride in his membership in the "Sons of the American Revolution." Harry's father fought three years in the Civil War and took part in the battle of Gettysburg. He re-enlisted and was captured in battle at Petersburg, Virginia, and taken to the Andersonville prison in Georgia. When he was released, he operated a funeral home in Hughesville for the next 40 years. Harry had five brothers and sisters: Bertha E. Houghton, Elmer Ellsworth Houghton, George Houghton, Reverend Horace Levan Houghton, and Annie B. Houghton.

When Harry was 13 years old, his brother, Elmer, invited him to come spend his summer in the lusty, roaring frontier town of Oklahoma City. Elmer had come to Oklahoma with Chief Quanah Parker, Indian cattle raiser, and opened the Saddlerock restaurant after the run. With money saved from selling newspapers, Harry bought a ticket on the first Frisco Meteor to roll into Oklahoma City. It was 1890, and Oklahoma City was wild and wooly, with nothing but frame buildings, boardwalks, and muddy streets. There were knife fights, gunfights, and free-for-all-brawling. Harry worked for Elmer the entire summer, then returned to Pennsylvania to finish school.

In about 1897 in Pennsylvania, Harry married Ella R. Leonard, who was born on October 17, 1875 in Pennsylvania. Their son, Leonard H. Houghton was born on May 4, 1897 in Pennsylvania. Harry packed up his family and moved to Muncy, Indiana (Delaware County) where Harry worked as a clothing merchant. In 1902, Harry packed them up again and moved west to Oklahoma City and established and operated a very successful clothing business for eight years and then sold out so he could try other endeavors. He tried the real estate business but found that too confining, and so he researched and established an insurance business, which eventually was named the National Life Assurance Company and located at 3rd and Broadway in Oklahoma City. Harry retired from that in 1945, after building the company into an organization worth millions that operated in four states. Harry then became a private investor and made a fortune from the rich Oklahoma City oil fields. He owned the first privately owned airplane in Oklahoma City and he was a most active leader in Oklahoma City's civic life. His wife, Ella, died on March 10, 1935, and was interred in the mausoleum in Rose Hill Burial Park in Oklahoma City.

Sometime later on a cruise to Europe, Harry met Effie Jean (Jeanne) Ladd, who coincidentally had worked at the National Life Assurance Company. Harry and Jeanne were married on February 11, 1938, in Oklahoma City. Jeanne was the daughter of Thomas Clinton Ladd and Effie Jean Blick. They bought a house at 600 NE 15th Street in Oklahoma City and they entertained lavishly, traveled extensively, and enjoyed the good life. The 1940 Federal Census for Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (Oklahoma County) shows Harry B. Houghton, an life insurance agent, age 64, born in Pennsylvania; and his wife, Effie Jeanne, age 39, born in Oklahoma.

On May 22, 1951, Harry's son, Leonard, died in the Scott-White Clinic in Temple, Texas. His body was returned to Oklahoma City and he was interred in the mausoleum at Rose Hill Burial Park. Three years later, on November 19, 1954, Harry died at the age of 78 from a skull fracture. He and Jeanne had an elevator in their home, and one evening he was saying goodnight to Jeanne while he backed into the elevator when its doors opened. The elevator wasn't there and he fell down the elevator shaft to his death. Harry was cremated by Hahn-Cook Funeral Home and placed in the Mausoleum in the Rose Hill Burial Park beside his first wife, Ella, and his son, Leonard. Jeanne died at the age of 70 on January 30, 1971 in St Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City of a cerebral infarction and was buried in the Fairlawn Cemetery.1,18
Gen. Soc.SAR (Harry stated it was based on great grandfather who fought under George Washington in Rev. War; but great grandfather Richard was born in 1771.20
