ObituaryMr. Greenwood was born in American Fork July 29, 1860, the son of William and Alice Houghton Greenwood, one of the most prominent families in the state's early history. His parents came to America and crossed the plains to Utah in 1847, arriving in Salt Lake valley October 28 of that year. Joshua Greenwood received his first schooling in American Fork and was graduated from Brigham Young university with the second class in 1879. Karl G. Maeser, prominent educator of the state, was then president of the institution. Served on School Board Mr. Greenwood devoted much of his early life to educational work and at the time of his death was a member, of the state board of education and a member of the governor's advisory committee on liquor control. In 1879 he went to Fillmore, in Milard county, where he taught school or 13 years, and later was appointed Millard county superintendent of chools. Qualifying for the bar, Mr. Greenwood advanced rapidly and soon became outstanding in the proession in southern Utah. He served as city attorney of Fillmore, probate judge, Millard county attorney and district attorney of the Fifth judicial district. Later, he was elected judge of the Fifth judicial district and he served in that capacity for 16 years, until 1917, when he resigned to become head of the public utliities commission. At that time he moved to Salt Lake. During his residence in southern Utah he became closely associated with its financial and industrial life. At the time of his death he was president of the Jumbo Plaster and Cement company of Richfield and president of the Juab County Mill and Elevator company of Nephi. He was a prime mover in the organization of the Parowan Reservoir and Canal company for conservation of the waters of Little Salt lake. Organizer of Bank He was one of the organizers of the State Bank of Millard county, one of the first banks in that part of the state. He took a similar part in the organization of the State Bank of St. George, and was identified with the State Bank of Parowan and banks in Pioche and Payson. He was one of the incorporators of the Inter-Mountain Life Insurance company, now the California Western States Life Insurance company. He was a director of the company when he died. Mr. Greenwood was active for years in work of the L. D. S. church in Millard and Juab counties and Salt Lake City. He occupied many ecclessiastical positions throughout his life. He served on a church mission to England from 1886 to 1888 and was president of the Leeds conference. He was the organizer of L. D. S. academies at Millard and Davis stakes. A staunch Democrat, Mr. Greenwood for many years was an adviser and counselor of the party in the state. Friends cited his ability, efficiency and straight-forwardness as reasons for the fact that he never was defeated for public office. Survived by Widow Mr. Greenwood married Miss Josephine payne in 1883 and five daughters and one son were born to them. His first wife died October 17, 1919. and in 1921 he married Mrs. Hazel H. Jensen. Surviving are his widow, who is a member of the general board of the L. D. S. Relief society; one son, Marion J. Greenwood, vice president and general manager of the Utah Oil Refining company; five daughters: Mrs. C. A. Kimball, Mrs. H. E. Whitmore and Mrs. Afton G. Young, all of Salt Lake; Mrs. Hyrum Brough of Nephi, and Mrs. C. L. Horne of Ogden; two brothers and three sisters: Mrs. Rachel Hunter and Samuel Greenwood of American Fork; Owen Greenwood, Mrs. Emily Webster and Miss Lottie Greenwood of Los Angeles.
