Houghton to "cousin Francis" listing many of the descendants of Ralph Houghton: "I have nothing of the first Settlers in this Country...I find a Memorandum in my Fathers hand writing among Aunt Marys papers which is as follows. It is supported that this branch of the Houghtons are the descendants of Sir Richard Houghton. Sir Richard Houghton was created Knight by King James 1st about the year 1611. Sir Richard Houghton was said to be of Houghton Tower in Lancashire County England in 1635. Richard Houghton of London gave a number of barrels of powder to the people of... It is said that Sir Richard Houghton had three sons namely, Richard, Ralph, Joseph but some say John instead of Joseph. but it is believed that John was the son of Jonathan Houghton who was brother to Sir Richard Houghton as it is believed that Richard son of Sir Richard Houghton remained in England and that Ralph and Joseph came to America and landed at Charlestown Mass. in the time of the trouble in Charles 1st time in the precise year not known, supposed to be between the years 1633 & 1647. Joseph Houghton brother to Ralph who came from England with him lived and died a Bachelor."22
