ResearchMay 27, 2019Hello Charles! I hope you had a good Memorial Day. I don't know if I'm a viable candidate for the Houghton Surname Project, but I would be happy to participate if I qualify. I'll give you a truncated version of my situation. I recently received results from an Ancestry autosomal-DNA test. The test revealed that a woman I spent 63 years believing was my full-sister is actually my half sister. The test also revealed she had a new half-brother I don't have, and I am related to two people at the 300+ centimorgan level that she is not related to. Simply put, since my sister and I definitely share a common mother, this new information proves that the man I knew as my biological father, Fred Fagan, cannot be my biological father. The people listed as 300+ cm matches, Nancy Martini and James Aubrey Houghton, both come from Houghton lineage on one side and Savage and Peek lineage on the other. The Houghton connection looks much stronger, however. I have been in touch by email with James Aubrey Houghton, he is 93 years old now, and he told me he has interesting information for me, but I have not received it as yet. Although my search for the biological father is just a few days old, I do have an interesting candidate, Francis Edmund Houghton. His father, Roland Clyde Houghton, Jr., may be the great-grandfather of Nancy Martini and the uncle of James Aubrey. Francis also had a brother named Roland and was in the Air Force in the 1950s, as was Fred Fagan. According to my sister, my mother had an extra-marital relationship with a man known as Frank. Of course, I could be totally wrong, but I'm hopeful. So, I have strong reason to believe I may be a Houghton. I was thinking of doing the FamilyTreeDNA Y-test but if you feel I can be helpful to your project in some small way I would be glad to do the test with the Houghton Project. If not, I still find your online information very helpful in my search.

I just have to share some info I found yesterday in my Houghton research that would interest you as a master genealogist. When I was a boy, my mother used to take my brother Fred and I to visit our "Aunt" Elizabeth and our "Uncle" George. They were Elizabeth and George Babb of Suffolk, VA. We didn't think Aunt Elizabeth was really our aunt, but just a family friend who was kind to my mother. We were never told otherwise. In researching the Savage family that could also be my origin family, I found the marriage license of one Elizabeth Savage. On the license I saw the name George Washington Babb, the Uncle George of my youth! It turns out that Aunt Elizabeth, a lady I thought I was unrelated to, just a dear family friend, is really Elizabeth Savage Babb, the sister of Francis Edmund Houghton's mother Virginia Savage Houghton! Isn't that amazing?! Aunt Elizabeth may be my real great aunt. I'm looking like a family secret. ha Sincerely, Roland

BiographyRoland Fagan is a retired librarian living in Silver Spring, MD. He graduated from Old Dominion University (BS) and the University of Maryland, College Park (MLS). He served in the U.S. Army in Germany with the 237th Combat Engineer Battalion and the U.S. Army Reserves at Ft. Story, VA. He grew up in Chesapeake VA and has three sisters, two brothers, and a son. He enjoys sports, painting, and nature.

Deborah Houghton was kind enough to give me two pieces of information: (1) Francis told her he had fathered a child before he met Deborah's mother; (2) Francis was stationed at Hill Air Force Base in Utah in the 1950s, leaving there to go to England in October 1955, two months after I was born at Hill AFB.

He married Grietje Van Ness, whose family arrived in 1641. Susan’s daughter Sally married into another prominent colonial family. Her husband Daniel Skillman descended from Thomas who came to the continent in 1664 as part of Nicholl’s expedition to take New Amsterdam from the Dutch. Thomas married Sarah Pettit and is the founder of the American Skillman family.1
