Biography2011WATSONVILLE, Calif.- Investigators said a family of four died in a Watsonville plane crash Thursday night. The FAA says the plane hit the ground first and then skidded into the Watsonville Community Hospital's medical building, bursting into flames.

Chester Belknap, who co-owned the plane that crashed, said he knew the Santa Cruz family onboard. David Houghton was in the plane with his wife, Dede, and their two children, Luke and Ryan, flying to a family reunion at Pine Mountain.

ObituaryJul 15, 2011David, Dede, Luke and Ryan Houghton

Words cannot express the profound sense of loss among parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, close associates, and dear friends of David and DeDe Houghton and their sons, Luke and Ryan. All lost their lives suddenly and unexpectedly in a single engine plane crash in Watsonville, Calif., on July 7, 2011. Although their lives were far too short, each of them was special and touched many other lives deeply. Each will be missed. Those who knew and loved them may find some consolation that they fully enjoyed life as a family, volunteered generously to help others in many communities, and were together in their final moments.

The family loved traveling the world and getting to know local residents wherever they went as they pursued adventures in scuba diving, skiing, hiking and camping. Their outreach included assistance in the local community and in Mulege [Baja California] after Hurricane Jimena in 2009. They were known for their positive energy, optimism for life, living their dreams, and doing everything together as a family - and together is how they left this world.

David, born July 11, 1966, in Santa Cruz, Calif., graduated from Santa Cruz High School and earned a geology degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz. As an undergraduate, David served as a student firefighter, later as a firefighter and emergency medical technician at UCSC, and a resident preceptor at Crown College. DeDe [Dorothy], born April 4, 1967, at Fort Ord, Calif., graduated from King City High School, earned a teaching degree from California State University, Fresno, and then taught elementary school. She first met David in one of his diving classes in 1991. They were married Aug. 17, 1996, in Santa Cruz. Luke, their older son, was born July 26, 1998, in Santa Cruz and attended Branciforte Middle School. Ryan was born March 2, 2001, in Santa Cruz and attended DeLaveaga Elementary School. Both Luke and Ryan were Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-Hers and avid surfers. Luke enjoyed fencing competitions, playing on his computer, listening to classical music, and taking clarinet lessons. Ryan was active in kung fu, enjoyed playing with his Legos, and was certified as a scuba diver on a trip to Bonaire a few weeks ago. It was the first time they were able to dive together as a family.

David was a registered geologist with advanced certifications in many areas of environmental remediation. He was the founder, owner and principal geologist of A+ Environmental Services of Santa Cruz. He also started Aqua Safaris Scuba Center, a Santa Cruz scuba dive shop and school and outfitters of scuba diving vacations around the world. Recently DeDe focused on running Aqua Safaris while David developed his work in geology. The family, including Luke and Ryan, most recently returned from a scuba diving trip to Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles, off the coast of Venezuela. The Houghtons were flying to meet the families of David's sister and brother at Pine Mountain Lake, Calif., when their airplane crashed shortly after takeoff from the Watsonville Airport on July 7.

The Houghtons are survived by David's parents, Edward and Marian Houghton; DeDe's mother, Linda Anderson; DeDe's father, Wayne "Andy" Anderson, and her stepmother, Meredith; David's sister, Cathryn Houghton, and her husband, Curtis Renoe, and their children, Claire and Arthur; David's brother, John Houghton, and his wife, Jodi Weidler, and their daughter, Kaleigh; DeDe's brother, Mitch Anderson, and his wife, Cheri, and their son, Grant, and daughter, Bailey.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Twin Lakes Church and the Handicap Scuba Association where David and DeDe volunteered their time.

A memorial service to honor the lives of the David Houghton Family will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 16, at Twin Lakes Church, 2701 Cabrillo College Drive, Aptos, Calif. A tribute to the David Houghton family has been set up with updates, pictures, articles and comments from their extended family, friends and community at the family website at www.johnhoughton.com.

ObituaryJul 28, 2017Santa Cruz, CA, USA, Marian Eddy Houghton
October 3, 1932 - July 25, 2017
47 Year Resident of Santa Cruz
Marian Eddy Houghton died peacefully in her home in Santa Cruz, CA on 25 of July 2017 at the age of 84 surrounded by several generations of her family: her children, grandchildren, and husband of 53 years, Edward Houghton. Born in Marysville, CA in 1932, she took great joy in nurturing her children and grandchildren and in recounting stories of her pioneer ancestors in New England and California. She considered her roles as mother and grandmother as most important and meaningful in her life.
Marian's artistic talent was widely recognized by friends and family at an early age. Executing an oil painting in five minutes on stage, she became Miss Sacramento of 1950 and participated in the Miss California Pageant in Santa Cruz. She didn't like to sell her work. Her son David, age 11, cried when a Venetian collector was about to buy her portrait of David. She earned a university degree in art and spent two years at the Academia di Belle Arti (Venice) in advanced study with painter Emilio Vedova and a summer in Ravenna studying Byzantine mosaic techniques. She won first prize in a regional competition in northern Italy in 1978 and had one-person shows in commercial galleries in Padua and Venice with the support of Prof. Camillo Semenzato (Art History, Univ. of Padua) and Prof. Vittore Branch (Italian Literature, Univ. of Padua and Director of the Cini Foundation, Venice).
Marian was born during the Great Depression and remembers being hungry before her father, Owen Eddy, a "hard rock gold miner" was able to purchase land, dig a well, build a house, and plant a large garden in Auburn, CA. He was uneasy working in the deep mines and never wanted to be buried under ground; he wasn't. He especially liked his work as "head powder man" dynamiting the routes of highways across the Sierras, such as the Feather River Highway and US 40, later replaced by I-80 on the way to Donner Pass and Lake Tahoe. During World War II he became a master machinist in the Boeing Company.
As a child, Marian happily listened to the stories passed down by her grandmothers. Later and over many years she collected additional information and carefully documented the family history, including the early arrivals from England on the ships Mayflower (Cooke, 1620) and Handmaid (Gurney, 1630). Her maternal great grandfather, Benjamin Barnabus Gurney, younger son of sea Captain Barnabus H. Gurney and Mercy Gurney (nèe Hathaway), was the first schoolteacher in Marysville. Carrying his books across the Isthmus of Panama, he came to California by ship in 1854 from Marion, Massachusetts. He and his first wife Harriet Euretta Gurney (nèe Androus) owned a stage coach inn in Loma Rica where author Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) was a friend and frequent patron on his trips to the gold diggings. Marian's grandmother, Nancy Ethel Gurney (nèe McKinney), was also a schoolteacher, and Marian's mother, Marjorie Eddy (nèe Gurney), was the only woman optometrist in her graduating class of 200 at the University of Southern California in 1948. Marian's paternal great grandfather, Tom Williams, traveled by horseback from Michigan at age 16 and eventually settled in Round Valley on the Owens River, just north of Bishop, in 1866. He made his fortune as a farmer and rancher, supplying provisions for hungry gold-rush miners. Before long he owned most of the land in Round Valley. His granddaughter, realtor Edith Eddy Ward, followed his vision and is credited with the founding of Palm Desert and Indian Wells.
In Santa Cruz Marian served for many years as a Eucharistic Minister at Holy Cross Church and Dominican Hospital. She designed the baptismal font at the entrance of Holy Cross. She also worked tirelessly for several years to strengthen ecumenical connections among religious congregations in northern California. She was preceded in death by her son David, his wife Dorothy (DeDe) Houghton (nèe Anderson), and their sons Luke and Ryan. All died in a small plane crash in July 2011. Marian is survived by her husband Edward Houghton, her daughter Cathryn Houghton Renoe, son-in-law Curtis Renoe, their children Claire and Arthur, and her son John Houghton, his wife Jodi Houghton (nèe Weidler), and their daughter Kaleigh.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Cross Church (126 High Street) on Wednesday August 2, 2017, beginning at 4 o'clock p.m., and led by former pastor, Fr. Mike Marini. An informal reception will immediately follow in the parish hall. Instead of flowers, friends may honor Marian's memory by donations in her name to their preferred charity.
