ObituaryFeb 18, 2015Betty June (Salois) Houghton, 85, passed peacefully Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015 from complications of Alzheimer's Disease. She resided at the Spring Creek Memory Care in Bozeman. Betty was born in Dupuyer, Montana on Sept. 7, 1929 to Olive and Clarence Salois.

As a young girl, Betty moved with her family as they mined and her mom cooked on the sheep wagons. She graduated from Conrad High School in 1947. After graduation she and friends traveled to California where they attended Telegraphy School. It was here that she met her husband, Ray Houghton. Ray was on leave from the Marine Corp and on Nov. 25, 1947, their 63 years of marriage began. This union welcomed three children, Don, Robyn and Candi.

Betty worked several jobs with the Welfare Department, Hospital Admittance, and Sears. Her favorite job by far was working at Montana State University where she began in the Registrar's Office and ended 30 years later in the Industrial and Management Engineering Department. Betty loved working with people and loved each and every student she met. She collected treasures from many countries brought to her by students past and present. Many kept in contact with her over the years. Throughout her secretarial years, she learned and used everything from shorthand to the computer.

Betty loved gardening, crocheting and sewing. We can't even count the number of Christmas stockings she handmade for friends and family. She lovingly sewed each sequin in place. Betty even made a huge stocking and donated it the hospital for the first baby born that year. Her crocheting won her a blue ribbon at the Winter Fair in Bozeman. There are many people lucky enough to have her handiwork.

Betty was a member of Lily of the Valley Chapter of Eastern Star and the Bozeman United Methodist Church. She attended many Masonic outings with Ray and helped at philanthropic events.

Betty is survived by her sisters, Virginia Battle of Great Falls, and Peggy Broesder (Joe) of Belt; brother, Gary Syvertson (Sandra) of Great Falls; her children, Don (Donna) of Belgrade, Robyn Ross (John) of Billings, Candi McClue (Dick) of Phoenix; grandchildren, Michael Houghton (Wendy) of Manhattan, Kevin McClue (Jackie) of Portland, Jennifer Johnson (Neil) of Billings, Lynsey Lund of Billings, Donnie King of Belgrade, Loretta Dunning (Bruce) of Belgrade, Ed King (Nancee) of Great Falls, Darcy Gee (Butch) of Manhattan, Jeanne Zindler of Bozeman, Donna McClue of Phoenix, James McClue of Albuquerque, and Kelly Hart (Jim) of Helena. Also the loves of her life – her 18 great-grandchildren, including, Mason, Jonas, Calvin, Julia, Aria, Jacob, and Angel; along with several great-great-grandchildren, extended family members and friends.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Ray Houghton, her parents, brother Bob Salois, infant sister Gloria, stepfather Sanford Syvertson, and granddaughter Janice King Gustafson.

The family would like to extend many thanks to the staff of Rocky Mountain Hospice for their compassion and especially to the caring staff at Spring Creek Inn who treated Mom with dignity, kindness and most importantly, love.

At her request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service, 113 South Willson Ave. A reception will follow at the Elks Club, 205 Haggerty Lane.

Any memorial donations would be welcomed in Betty's name to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children, 911 W. 5th Ave., Spokane, WA 99204 or to a
charity of your choice
.

Mom, your gentleness and compassion for others is a lesson to be learned by all. Alzheimer's may have taken your memories but not ours. Our hearts are so heavy now, but we know that your spirit lives on in our hearts. We will be reunited. We are sure Dad was happy to dance with you once again this Valentine's Day.

Oh, and Grandma - - get the broom!!!
