April 12, 1922 - Dec. 20, 2008
With great sadness we announce the passing of Violet Houghton, devoted wife for 71 years of Grover R. Houghton. Vi was born in Wilton, North Dakota, daughter of Karl and Ollie Nelson. She is fondly remembered by her two surviving sisters, Doris Williams and Lenora Albericci of Sacramento, California, also by her many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by two brothers Lee and Duney Collins, and sister Caroline Dolly Williams. Violet was devoted to her country in civilian service working with her three sisters on the P38 line at McClellan Army Depot during World War II. The four sisters were the subjects of a war poster "the four sisters," depicting the valuable service women were contributing to the war effort. After the war, Violet worked as Office Manager for several establishments in the Sacramento area, among a few are Bon Marche' and Robinsons (womens apparel), Cotting Enterprises (R.E. Development), and Cameron Pontiac. She passed away quietly at her residence in Placerville (Swansboro) CA.1

BiographyHe was educated in the Lyme school and at the North Thetford Academy. For a year he was in service of the Passumpic Railroad Company at Sherbrooke, P. Q., in the station there, during his brother Charles Henry's agency of that railroad in that town. In 1880 he entered employmenat at the department store of Houghton and Dutton, in Boston, where he remained two years as buyer and six years as general superintendent. Failing health necessitating his return to the country, he brought the dry-goods store of George M. Houghton at Lebanon, NH, and, in 1887, removed to that place, where he remained for 2 years. In 1890 he removed to Boston, MA, and built up a large business as a wholesale rubber boot and shoe merchant, as a member of the firm of Converse and Pike, on Federal St., which in 1908, was changed to M. M. Converse, 220 Congress St. From 1884 to 1887, the family resided in Winchester, MA; from 1887 to 1890 in Lebanon, NH; and since 1890, their residence has been at Medford, MA, where Mr. Converse is a member of the Mystic Congregational Church, Salem St., and Treasurer of the Church Society. Ill health, in consequence of overwork, obliged him to relinquish business cares for a time, and to seek in rest, a restoration of health. He is now manager of the Beacon Falls Rubber Shoe Co., manufacturer of rubber shoes, with office at 181 Congress St.1
NotableConverse Shoes: In 1908, Marquis M. Converse, in his late 30's and previously a respected manager at a footwear manufacturing firm, opened the Converse Rubber Shoe Company for business in Malden, Massachusetts and begins providing winterized rubber soled footwear for men, women, and children. By 1910 Converse Rubber Company was producing 4,000 pairs of shoes daily, but it wasn't until 1915 that the company began manufacturing athletic shoes for tennis. Basketball, less than 25 years old, was revolutionized in 1917 when Converse designed and produced the world's first performance basketball shoes, the Converse All Star.
. The company closed its last U.S. factory and moved manufacturing to Asia when the company changed hands, and in July 2003, Converse accepted an offer from Nike to buy out the company for $305 million.
