ObituarySep 4, 2008Baltimore, Baltimore Co., MD, USA, From the Baltimore Sun E. Edward Houghton With his wife, the philanthropist, thoroughbred horse breeder and fox hunter raised more than 40 stakes winners.

By Frederick N. Rasmussen September 4, 2008

E. Edward Houghton, a prominent thoroughbred horse breeder and fox hunter, died Sunday of pulmonary fibrosis at Buckingham Farm, his Chestertown home. He was 67. Mr. Houghton was born in Somerville, N.J., and raised in Colorado and Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Conestoga High School in Berwyn, Pa., and earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture from Pennsylvania State University.
Mr. Houghton was farm manager at Happy Hill Farm, a thoroughbred breeding farm in Newtown Square, Pa., from 1960 to 1964. In 1964, he and his wife, the former Elizabeth "Binnie" Fowler, whom he married in 1960, moved to Buckingham Farm overlooking the Chester River. "For over 40 years, Eddie and his wife have bred, raised and raced some of the nation's finest thoroughbred runners on Maryland's Eastern Shore," said Ross Peddicord, The Sun's former racing writer and now co-publisher of Maryland Life, who first became friends of the couple during his student days at Washington College in the late 1960s. "They have bred, raised or raced more than 40 stakes winners, including five Maryland-bred champions and the winners of five runnings of the Maryland Million Classic. Having a stakes winner every year for 40 years isn't an easy task," Mr. Peddicord said. "Eddie's passing will leave a big vacuum in the racing and sporting traditions of Maryland," he said.
Mr. Houghton, who enjoyed going to the races to see his horses sporting their yellow and green racing silks run, was a member of the Jockey Club, the sport's governing body based in New York and Kentucky. "Eddie and Binnie operated the Buckingham Farm racing stable as a team and at the highest level. They carefully planned matings for their mares, breeding them to the best stallions; employed the best trainers; and then when their horses' careers were finished, provided a happy retirement for them, either on their farm or in a second career as jumpers or riding horses," Mr. Peddicord said. The couple also enjoyed giving away their retired racehorses to friends. "They are role models of how owners should conduct themselves in the sport and have received numerous honors not only for their fine runners, but for their sportsmanship and generosity to sporting causes," Mr. Peddicord said. He was a member of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, the Maryland Horse Breeders Association and the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. In addition to being the "consummate horseman," according to Mr. Peddicord, Mr. Houghton was an animal lover, outdoorsman and environmentalist. "Those were the passions closet to his heart, other than his wife and family," Mr. Peddicord said. In addition to his horses, over the years, Mr. Houghton's menagerie included pigs, zebras, peacocks, buffaloes and a string of racing and show mules. Mr. Houghton, who was active with the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy and the Maryland Environmental Trust, placed his 120-acre farm in preservation programs that ensured it will remain undeveloped. For many years, he rode with the Flint Hill Hounds, and when he gave up riding several years ago, continued to follow the local Kent County pack in his sport utility vehicle. Tall, lean and athletic, Mr. Houghton was a well-known and well-liked figure in Chestertown, and counted among his friends people from all walks of life. "Waitresses, watermen, farmers, to the president of Washington College and members of the du Pont family were his friends," Mr. Peddicord said. "He treated everyone the same, with humor, kindness and respect, and would go out of his way to help people." Mr. Houghton and his wife supported many charitable and philanthropic organizations anonymously and without fanfare, according to friends. He was a past board member of the Kent County Humane Society and Kent School. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church. For years, Mr. Houghton and his wife enjoyed spending time at a ranch in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in Montana that they recently sold. Also surviving are two daughters, Kim Houghton Johnson of Landing, N.J., and Genevieve Pierce of Ennis, Mont; a brother, Ronald B. Houghton of Christiana, Pa; a sister, Doris Green of West Chester, Pa; and four granddaughters.

DeathAug 7, 2017Chestertown, MD, USA
ObituaryAug 15, 2017CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Elizabeth "Binnie" Houghton, a thoroughbred horse breeder and animal lover, died of a respiratory condition Monday at Buckingham Farm, her Chestertown home.
Born in New York City, she was the daughter of Anderson Fowler, who also owned race horses, and his wife, Genevieve Brady. Family members were prominent New York City bankers. Her uncle, James Cox Brady, was chairman of the New York Racing Association.
She was raised in Gladstone, N.J. and was a graduate of the Foxcroft School in Middleburg, Va.
She married Edward Houghton, a well-known horseman, in 1960. They moved to Buckingham Farm overlooking the Chester River in Kent County.
"My mother was extraordinarily in love with every living creature," said her daughter, Genevieve Pierce of Ennis, Mont. "She was an animal lover from the bottom of her heart. She wouldn't turn a rescue donkey down."
Her daughter recalled that Mrs. Houghton drove around her farm with buckets of horse treats in the back of her car.
"The horses knew her and saw her coming," said her daughter. "She also had a can of corn for the geese along the dock at Chestertown. They could spot her car when she arrived."
"The Houghtons - Binnie and her late husband, Eddie, - were part of an influx of well-heeled out-of-state horse breeders who were attracted to move to Maryland in the 1960s and '70s because of our thriving ]thoroughbred industry and breeders' incentive programs," said Ross Peddicord, a longtime friend. "Folks like the Houghtons, Jim Lewis,Cynthia McGinnes and Kim Firestone. They brought energy and resources, established beautiful farms and bred good horses.
"Binnie had a razor wit and absolute love and devotion to animals and the land," said Mr. Peddicord, director of the Maryland Horse Industry Board. "I think for something like 30 straight years she and Eddie either bred, raised or raced a stakes winner each year. They developed Buckingham Farm that fronts on the Chester River into one of the most beautiful horse farms in Maryland and placed it into farmland preservation programs."
Mrs. Houghton owned the thoroughbreds Castelets, Gallorette, He Loves Me, Laplander, Timely Warning, Master Speaker, Forry Cow How, Top of the News, Kalli and Roaring Lion, among others.
"The Hougtons were world travelers, owned land out west and raced mules out there as well as maintaining their East Coast thoroughbreds," said Mr. Peddicord. "They had an animal sanctuary on their farm with all kinds of animals and had a bronze likeness cast of one of their favorite pigs."
A 2011 article in The Maryland Horse described the animals she kept, in addition to her thoroughbreds: "Also in residence… are five ponies, two mules, three donkeys and five llamas - along with the farm's typically generous array of thoroughbred pensioners."
"We take care of them so well they tend to live forever," she said in that story.
"She and her husband were inseparable as a couple, but Binnie managed to soldier on after her beloved husband died," Mr. Peddicord said.
"One of the horses raised on their farm, Green Alligator, finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby and the Derby winner, Barbaro, descended from generations of horses bred and raised by the Houghtons and Binnie's father, Anderson Fowler," he said.
Mrs. Houghton's horses wore yellow and green racing silks. She belonged to the Jockey Club, the sport's governing body based in New York and Kentucky.
She was also a member of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, the Maryland Horse Breeders Association and the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.
Mrs. Houghton was active with the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy and the Maryland Environmental Trust.
She previously rode with the Flint Hill Hounds. When she stopped active riding, she followed the local Kent County pack in her white Mercedes sport utility vehicle - nicknamed "White Stallion."
She was a past board member of the Kent County Humane Society and Kent School. She was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church. She also enjoyed visits to a Montana ranch in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.
Plans for a private memorial are incomplete.
In addition to her daughter, survivors include another daughter, Kim Houghton Johnson of Landing, N.J; four granddaughters; and a great grandson. Her husband of 48 years died in 2008.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be sent to the Kent County Humane Society, P.O. Box 352 Chestertown, MD 21620. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.fhnfuneralhome.com

See http://people.zeelandnet.nl/cgriep/index.htm also Cornelis van Houdt is mentioned there3
ResearchThe name was commonly spelled as Van Houdt. But before 1811 (start of official civil registration) the name was spelled in different ways like: van Hout, van Houten or sometimes even: van den Houte.
