DeathJun 7, 2007Kansas City, MO, USA, in a fire at his home.
King said it appeared Gerold Houghton, 85, tried to fight the fire, because he was found in the living room with a fire extinguisher in his hands. Having failed, he apparently tried to escape with his wife, Deana Houghton, 77, because the front door was found open, King said.

“But he was overcome by smoke and heat,” King said.

Deana Houghton was severely visually impaired and had limited mobility, King said.

King said the house had poor ventilation, which allowed the fire to burn inside for a long time before a neighbor noticed smoke wafting from the home.2

Deceased Name: Gerold Houghton and Deana Houghton: Space heater blamed in fire that killed 2 in Gladstone, Mo.
A fire that killed an elderly couple in their suburban Kansas City home of 50 years was accidental, authorities say.

The fire started in the bathroom where the space heater ignited nearby combustibles, said Gladstone public safety spokesman Richard King.

Gerold Houghton, 85, and Deana Houghton, 77, were found in the living room of the house after units arrived around 3 p.m. Thursday. Gerold Houghton had a fire extinguisher in his hands, King said

The front door was open, indicating that the Houghtons were overcome as they tried to flee, King said.

The victims are believed to have died of smoke inhalation.

King said the home's poor ventilation allowed the fire to burn for a long time before a neighbor noticed smoke wafting through the roof. The fire consumed much of the oxygen inside, King said.
