Oliver Van Lieu Houghton, 86, of Princeton, died May 7.

Born in Trenton, he grew up in Lawrenceville and moved to Princeton 58 years ago after his marriage to Marion Stover.

He attended Princeton High School and The Hun School, then graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in civil engineering. He served as an officer in World War II in the Navy Civil Engineering Corps with the 68th Seabee Battalion.

He was self-employed as a building contractor and civil engineer and had his own business in Princeton from 1945 until his retirement in 1990.

He was an active member of The Nassau Club, Trinity Church, the American Legion, and Springdale Golf Club. He loved spending time with his family and playing golf, and later in his life, spending time with his Springdale Breakfast Club.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marion Stover Houghton; a son, Douglas; a daughter, Jill; a brother, Jack of Florida; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service was held May 11 at Trinity Church, followed by a reception at Springdale Golf Club.

Memorial donations may be sent to SAVE, the Princeton Small Animal Rescue League, 900 Herrontown Road, Princeton; or to PHS Senior Living Foundation, 13 Roszel Road, Suite C120, Princeton 08543.

Arrangements were under the direction of The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home.

ObituaryNov 1, 2012Princeton, NJ, USA, John Hart 'Jack' Houghton PRINCETON - John Hart "Jack" Houghton, 85, passed away on Oct. 5, 2012, in Sarasota, FL, after a long illness. Jack was born in Trenton, NJ, on Nov. 16, 1926. He grew up in Trenton and Lawrenceville and moved to Princeton as a young adult. Jack was a war veteran, serving in the Army briefly during World War II. He was a longtime resident of Princeton and a real estate broker and developer. He was a graduate of Princeton High School and Pennington Prep, and then went on to Rutgers University, where he played baseball. He was a member of the Springdale Golf Club and was an avid golfer and photographer. Jack was married to Miriam Houghton for more than 50 years; she predeceased him in 2007. After living in Princeton, the Houghtons lived for several years on the New Jersey Shore before retiring to Sarasota, FL. Jack was the son of Harold and Mae Houghton of Princeton, and had one brother, Oliver, who predeceased him in 2007. He leaves behind a niece and nephew, a godchild, and a grand-niece and grandnephew. A memorial service is planned for the spring of 2013 in Basking Ridge, NJ, where his wife was buried. The date will be announced later in 2013. Jack loved dogs and cats; he had many over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in John Houghton's name to SAVE, an animal rescue organization in Princeton, NJ.3
