BiographyAncestry.Com, janwal1953: John William Houghton was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1890. That is, according to one of his passport applications.

John's father, James W Houghton and mother, Elizabeth Brooks emigrated to the USA in 1885 and stayed there until 1892/3. One passport application says 1892. The other says 1893. I'm not sure whether James Houghton died during one of those years and if his mother returned home following this. One of John's passport applications states that he wished to visit his mother and collect his wife and son to return to the USA. The other that he wished to visit relatives.

One of the passport applications also states that he lived in England between 1892 and February 1911. He then returned to the USA. The passport application said that John wanted to sail from Boston to England on 23.06.1923 on the SS Scythia.

I need to find out when John's mother returned to England.

There is another mystery. I have a letter relating to John's sister: Hannah Ellen Houghton dating back to 1950s. The letter was from a care home acknowledging that John did not want to take responsibility for his sister's affairs. I've found no record of her death. I've found no record of her birth, either.12

Comments: I am searching for any information on my grandfather, retired Maj. Horace "Jack" Houghton. He, too, refused to talk about either war and only told me a little bit about non-combat posts. I know he lied to get into the Marines and qualify for the GI bill, they found out, kicked him out cause he was too young. He used to laugh and tell me it served him right cause he later missed out on two years of Social Security. Then, he got some college under his belt - THAT was an interesting story, as apparently he was quite handsome and a bit of a rouge - and became an officer in the Army. He retired with the pay of a Lt. Colonel and the rank of Major. I do not know the timetable of his service. He especially did not like to talk about Korea - he told me it was a bloodbath and too many good men died. He mentioned the Philipines and McArthur - not too fondly, he was the head of the MPs for McArthur. He was in occupied Japan near Mt. Fuji because there was a picture of him in uniform at the house the family lived in with Mt. Fuji in the background. I know he knew the actress, Brenda Vacarro's father because my mother told me they were playmates as children. He was also stationed in Ft. Stewart fairly early in his career, I believe. In France in the mid-fifties. And, I believe he finished up his career at Ft. Dix in the late 50's. I actually was rushed to the hospital at McGuire AFB for a bad burn when I was an infant - probably 1963. Oh, and he rode horses at some point in the military 'cause it rubbed off all the hair on his inner thighs - I thought it was quite amusing as a child to see him in shorts!

I am interested in ANY info and if anyone knew him or my grandmother, Mary. She was quite beautiful and had been Miss Illinois.5
BiographyJanet Walters (nee Rowley): John William Houghton asked Elizabeth Matilda Houghton to marry him and go out to the USA with him.

Her mother refused to give her permission for the marriage (Elizabeth, known as 'Till', wasn't 21 and therefore needed her mother's permission to marry).

John returned to the USA and married Edith Annie Hill. Edith came from Brierley Hill, Staffordshire, England. I assume that John met her in the USA.

Edith gave birth to Horace, but died while he was still quite young.

John came back to England at some point, met up with Till, who was by then old enough to marry without permission. She went out to New York and married John. The story is they married on board ship. I've no idea if that's true or not.

Horace visited England with his mother twice according to records. I assume they visited her family. I'm not sure whether Horace's visit in 1928, at the age of 14, was unaccompanied, or who he visited.

Horace came back to 4 Keelinge Street, Tipton, Staffordshire in March 1960, following the death of his father. Till died six weeks after John, but I think Horace had returned home before her death (not 100% sure).

Horace was said to have been in the American Army. I've found no confirmation of this, but when Great Aunt Lil (Olive Lily Doleman, nee Brock) was trying to contact Horace, she wrote to the Army to try to find his whereabouts. She received a letter stating that his address could not be divulged. She could, however, engage the services of a private detective.

Aunt Lil wanted to contact Horace, as his half-brother, Leonard, had quite a serious mental illness. Leonard eventually was admitted to a mental hospital where he stayed until it's closure. He was then transferred to a home. He may have moved to another home run by the same company (ExtraCare) in Stafford. I'm not sure. I was hassled for information on Horace so that they could search for him. I told them what little I knew, but a number of years later, I had to go through it all again. I was contacted by a man who was very pushy and demanding, and acted as if I was obstructing him in some way.

I gave the same information that I had given before and shook him off. Horace was never found.

Leonard died.

It was only when I began doing family tree research that I discovered that Horace had died in 1989. I have no idea what happened to him between 1960 and 1989 and nothing about any family he may have had.

Centerville - Richard Law, 80, died June 7, 2005, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of the late Mary Phillips Law. They were married for 40 years.

Mr. Law lived and worked in Centerville his entire life.

In World War II, he was a Navy sonar man and was stationed on the Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides.

After the war, he became a registered land surveyor and entered into business with his uncle.

As a young man, he played on the town softball and volleyball leagues and was a volunteer fireman.

He was an accomplished skeet shooter and an avid boater. He loved living on the Cape, its surrounding waters and meeting its people.

Survivors include a son, Mark Bearse Law.

A graveside service was held in Beechwood Cemetery in Centerville.
