SPRINGFIELD - Marjorie H. "Mardy" Hinkley, 85, died Feb. 22, 2012, at Springfield Hospital.

She was born Aug. 3, 1926, in Westfield, Mass., the daughter of Shirley A. and Edna (Kingsley) Houghton.

She graduated in 1944 from Windsor High School.

On Sept. 4, 1948, she married George A. "Joe" Hinkley in Weathersfield Bow.

Mrs. Hinkley was employed as switchboard operator at Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield for many years. She also worked as an Avon and a Stanley Home Products representative for several years.

She volunteered at the Springfield Hospital switchboard and for the Springfield Meals on Wheels Program.

She was a member of First Congregational Church UCC in Springfield, the Order of Eastern Star and West Springfield Garden Club.

Mrs. Hinkley enjoyed knitting, was an avid bowler and a self-taught pianist.

Survivors include her husband and a son, Douglas Hinkley, both of Springfield; two daughters, Barbara Bernier of Brunswick, Maine, and Janice Stearns of Chester; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Jean Hinkley of Ascutney; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four siblings, twin sister Marion Shultz, Roger Houghton, Dorothy Wales and Beverly Rabideau.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at First Congregational Church UCC in Springfield, with the Rev. Christine Boardman, interim pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in Ascutneyville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church UCC, 77 Main St., Springfield, VT 05156; or Springfield Humane Society, 401 Skitchewaug Trail, Springfield, VT 05156.

READING, VT — Catherine Houghton Smith, 73. died peacefully Friday, June 24th. 2022 at the Tack Byme Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock in Lebanon, NI I surrounded by family. She was born September 22, 1948, in St. Albans, VT a daughter of Robert and Mary (Baumgardner) Houghton. Cathee grew up in St. Albans and graduated from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans and attended James Madison College in Virginia. She received an Associate's degree in Computer Science from American International College. On December 19, 1970 she married Gardner H. Smith at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in St. Albans and in 1973 moved to Reading. VT.
She worked at Albert Bridge Elementary School in Brownsville for many years as an administrative assistant. Gathee was a volunteer for Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports which led to coaching for Vermont Special Olympics lor over 30 years. She was active in coaching skiing, snowshoeing. and bocce ball. Gathee coached National and World Special Olympics Games. Cathee spent many hours at Green Mountain Horse Association for 4-H and marked hundreds of miles of trail for riders all over the Green Mountains. She was a softball, baseball, football, theatre, scuba, lacrosse, and horse mom. Cathee and her family hosted many international exchange students. Siie loved skiing, snowshoeing, traveling, reading, knitting, trail riding, camping, sailing. cribbage, skipping rocks on Lake Champlain and many activities with family and friends. Cathee had a knack for finding beautiful seashells especially along the beaches of the outer banks in North Carolina during family vacations and collected them. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Woodstock,
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Gardner, and their three children, daughter, Jody (Chad) Hickey of Gut Rank, MT; son, Matthew (Sheri) Smith and their
children, fay lor and Rose of Reading, VT; Thomas 'Woody' Jennifer) Smith and their children, Noah, Rose, Molly Jo and Stella Mae of Lincoln, GA:
her brother, Robert (Lynn) Houghton of North Wilksboro, NC; her sister, Dorothy Joint) Kosicki of Charlotte, NG as well as several nieces, nephews and friends
who became family. She was predeceased by her parents and one brother, Ralph. A celebration of life will be held Monday, July 11th at 4-7pm at Knight Funeral Home in Windsor, VT. Burial will be held at a later date at the Houghton Family plot in the Greenwood Cemetery in St. Albans VT

Deceased Name: Merle H. Houghton
MARSHFIELD - Merle H. Houghton, 80, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at Rowan Court Nursing Home in Barre City were she was a resident. Born in Brookfield on Feb. 2, 1926, she was the daughter of Lewis and Ruth (Angell) Hayward. Merle lived in Marshfield since she was a child. She taught school for over twenty years, first at Twinfield School, and retired from Cabot School in 1989. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gama as well as the Vermont Retired Teachers Association. A devoted lifetime member of the Marshfield United Church, Merle was active in many church activities including teaching Sunday school and bible school. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and family oriented activities. Her family and community were most important to her.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Houghton of Marshfield, whom she married in the Marshfield United Church on Dec. 22, 1945; three sons and their spouses, Robert C. Houghton (Mary-Jane) of Charlestown, S.C., Robin L. Houghton (Tara) of Cumming, Ga., and Roderick A. Houghton (Joan) of Barre; a daughter, Pamela Hudson, and her husband Ralph of West Danville; two brothers, Alvin Hayward of Nampa, ID, and Harold Hayward of Marshfield; a sister, Beth Bissonette of Ascutney; as well as nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many cousins, nieces and nephews. Merle was predeceased by a brother, Welden Hayward, and a sister, Lois Gilman.

Funeral services will be in the spring at the Marshfield United Church with burial to follow in the family lot in Eaton Cemetery in Marshfield. A newspaper notice with the date and time will be published prior to the services. Contributions in Merle's memory may be made to Rowan Court Nursing Home Activities Fund, 378 Prospect St., Barre City, VT 05641. Arrangements are under the direction of des Groseilliers Funeral Homes Church in St. Hardwick.³
