Confederate Pension Applicatns, Washington County, Virginia

The State of Virginia enacted its first pension law for
Confederate Veterans in 1888. It was restricted to those who
were residents of Virginia as of April, 1861, and who had also
resided in Virginia for at least five years prior to filing of
application. An applicant must have been indigent to the extent
that he did not earn more than $200 per year, and had no property
value of more than $1,000. He must also have been disabled due
to wounds or disease suffered while in service.

The following three separate lists contain the names of those who
made applications in Washington County. The applications are
separated into three series according to the year of the act under
which they were granted. The first was in 1888, the second in 1900,
and the third was in 1902 extending through 1934. Please note that
these lists do not contain the names of those children and sisters
who were allowed pensions under the Act of 1915.

Mrs. Martin died Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George L. Roger, 202 Deep Creek Road, Warwick County.

She was the widow of W. P. Martin. She is survived by another daughter, Mrs. John M. Coleman; three sons, William A., Carey A. and James E. Martin; a brother, R. A. Haughton; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Woodfin; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
