ResearchThomas was the husband of my great grandmother Ellen Thorpe Smith and from what I can recall my aunt’s (all long gone now) a ner do well who finally abandoned Ellen. Growing up, never heard a good word about him. Now as I approach my 80’s myself I have learned to take some of this with the proverbial grain of salt. Do you know anything about about Thomas other than his Father’s name, etc? I’m so happy to have discovered this wiki tree website. Thank you so much for helping me along. I’ve got info dating way, way back on both sides of my family and look forward to working with kind folks like you to keep me on target.

MRS. NETTIE HOUGHTON

Mrs. Nettie Houghton, who has been ill the past five weeks with acute heart trouble, passed away at her home with her daughter, Mrs. Lina [sic] Hoeppner and family at 31 Hawthorne street, Thursday, Oct. 24th, aged 68 years.

Nettie Stowe was born in Cohocton, Steuben county, June 20, 1861 and was married to Clark Houghton 51 years ago. Soon after their marriage they settled on the farm home east of the village where all but the youngest of their children were born. After the death of Mr. Houghton about four and one-half years ago, her daughter and family made their home with her, all coming to the home in the village about a year ago.

The deceased was a member of the local Baptist church and a charter member of the Rebekah lodge, the members of which attended the funeral services in a body. She was also a loving and devoted mother and has been tenderly cared for by the daughter and other children during the days of suffering. Soon after the husband's death, Mrs. Houghton suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which she never completely recovered.

The last of her immediate family she is survived by the following children: Ray, Mrs. Hoeppner, Mrs. Bert Hiliker, Howard, Clarence and Earle of Perry and Kenneth of Rochester and eleven grandchildren.

The funeral services were very largely attended from the home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, her pastor, Rev. J. B. Freestone officiating. The bier was surrounded with beautiful flowers. Her sons acted as bearers and carried her to the family lot in Hope cemetery where she was laid by the husband.

Friends from out of town at the services were: Mrs. R. W. Duncan and Miss E. A. Johnson of Lockport; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Paulson and daughter Madeline of Hilton; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Agar and daughter Alice of Honeoye Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Leon Head and Frank Gath, Sr., of Attica; and Mrs. Frank Violtele of Bradford, Pa.

MRS. NETTIE HOUGHTON

Mrs. Nettie Houghton, who has been failing in health during the past five years, and who suffered a heart attack five weeks ago, died last Thursday evening at 8 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lena Hoeppner, on the corner of Hawthorne and Grove streets.

She was a daughter of Elisha and Achsa Stowe and was born in Cohocton, N.Y., on June 20, 1861. She was the last of a family of three children - a son and two daughters.

When she was about 3 years of age, her parents removed to Leicester, where she grew to womanhood and was married in 1878 to Clark B. Houghton of Perry. They removed to Collins, N.Y., where they resided for a short time, returning to Perry, where the rest of their lives was spent. Mr. Houghton passed away five years ago.

The were parents of eight children, six sons and two daughters. One son died in infancy.

She is survived by the followin named children: Mrs. Lena Hoeppner, Mrs. Margaret Heliker, Ray, Howard, Clarence and Earl, of Perry, and Kenneth of Rochester.

During her illness she has been tenderly cared for by her daughter Mrs. Hoeppner.

Mrs. Houghton was a member of the Baptist Church of this place and of Mystic Union Rebekah Lodge. She was active in both while her health permitted, and was a woman highly esteemed by all who knew her. Devoted to her family, she nevertheless found time to give to church and social duties.

Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Hoeppner last Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and were largely attended, members of the Mystic Union Lodge turning out in a body. Rev. J. B. Freestone officiated and interment was made in the family lot in Hope Cemetery.
