BiographyI have just been contacted by a distant cousin (Cindy B.) with this information: The Houghton family left Sulfur Springs on Dec. 2, 1867 and headed SW (due to poor economic conditions). The weather got bad and James D. got sick while driving the oxen. They stopped at a family's ranch in Navarro County, near Waco Texas. They stayed with this family, the Ritchies (I have found that their house was a common stop). James D. developed pneumonia and died on Dec. 24, 1867. He was buried in the Ritchies' family plot. (He only has a marker at the Little Lake Cemetary, and is not buried there)

----Houghton, Charles F. (27 Aug. 1851 – 14 Dec. 1934)

Charles F. Houghton passed away about 10:15 Friday evening, Dec. 14, 1934, aged 83 years, 3months and 17 days.

Mr. Houghton was born Aug. 27, 1851, in Allegany County, New York. In 1854 he came with his parent to Lake Geneva vicinity, in Illinois. In the year 1856, the Houghton families, four in number, migrated from northern Illinois, and settled on homestead land in Houghtonburg, Sidney Houghton, wife, and son, Charles, taking up the land which is now the E. W. Grush farm, where the subject of this sketch lived for all, excepting ten years of his long life. He lived in Humbird for ten years, and on July 3, 1932, he returned to the old home farm, where he has been cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Grush until the time of his death.

Mr. Houghton was united in marriage, at Sparta, to Miss Alice May Walker, on July 4, 1876. She preceded him in death after twenty years of happy married life, on Jan. 1, 1896. No children were born to this union and Mr. Houghton never remarried, turning his affection the little ones and young people with whom he came in contact.

Farming was his life occupation, which he followed until advancing years made it necessary for him to rent the farm, and it was eventually sold, Mr. Grush being the purchaser about twenty years ago. He attended high school at Black River Falls in his youth, and was a graduate of Gale College of Galesville. In the early ‘70s he was a clerk in the store of E. A. Freeman in this village. He was an active member of the old Odd Fellow lodge, which existed in Humbird many years ago.

The funeral services were held at the Grush home Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, Dec. 16th, 1934, and burial was in the family lot in Houghtonburg Cemetery. Rev. V. D. Weidler officiated. Pallbearers were old neighbors, and the large number of flowers testified to the esteem this pioneer settler was held in the community. He leaves no near relatives. Clarence Houghton is a cousin, and is the sole survivor of those pioneers who journeyed by ox team into the frontier lands to make farms out of the wilderness.7
BiographyHoughton, Charles (27 AUG 1851)
Charles Houghton was born Aug. 27, 1851, in Allegheny Co., N.Y., and came to Wisconsin in 1855. He was the son of Sidney Houghton and still lives on the old homestead in Houghtonburg settle by his father so many years ago. He was married to Miss Mae Waltker July 4, 1876. Mrs. Houghton was an invalid for many years and passed away Jan. 1, 1894. Mr. Houghton believes that Humbird is doing as much business as any of the small towns and that we are going to see better times from now on. Extensive advertising by the merchants has drawn more trade here, which has greatly helped the town. Now if we could have a small manufacturing plant and more men with capital there would be no question of Humbird, Clark County, Wis.'s rapid growth.

----Houghton, Ira Clarence (21 May 1853 – 4 March 1935)

Clarence Houghton, pioneer settler of Houghton, and the last of the older generation of Houghtons died at his home at 12 o’clock noon, Monday, March 4, 1935, after an illness of paralysis, dating back several years.

Funeral services are held this Thursday afternoon at the home, Rev. V. D. Weidler preaching the sermon. Masonic rites were given by W. E. Waters, past master of Humbird Lodge. Burial was in the Houghtonburg Cemetery.

Ira Clarence Houghton was born in Walworth County, Wisconsin, May 21, 1853. He was an only son of Oliver and Caroline Walker Houghton. The father was a native of Courtland County, New York, and came to Wisconsin territory in 1846, where he was united in marriage the following year. A daughter, Stella, was also born during their residence in Walworth county. Stella in later years became the wife of Byron Harvey, and resided in this section until her death more than fifty years ago. Clarence was a boy of about twelve years when the father, and his four brothers, and their families left Walwroth county and journeyed by covered wagon and ox team to the newly opened government lands in central Wisconsin. The boy Clarence drove one of the ox teams to the new home in Houghtonburg. The homestead taken by his father is the only one which has remained in the family.

The log cabin boyhood home of the deceased was the scene of the first religious meeting, the first school meeting, and the first town meeting held in this part of the new settlements of the state.

Mr. Houghton grew to young manhood on the farm, and June 8, 1873, was united in marriage with Mrs. Emma E. Davis, of Black River Falls. For seven years following their marriage they lived on a farm near Visalia, Calif., and then came back to the old homestead. The call of the frontier was again heeded, this time taking them to Nelson County, North Dakota for eight years. This time they returned to the old home farm to remain, excepting a short period spent in California fifteen years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Houghton happily celebrated their golden wedding in June, 1923, and their sixtieth anniversary in 1933, although at that time Mr. Houghton was affiliated with the illness which eventually caused his death. Mrs. Houghton passed away Nov. 27th, 1934. Mr. Houghton survived his beloved helpmate only about three months. He attained the age of 81 years, 9 months and 13 days.

Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Ella Harvey, and three sons, Sidney, Hugh, and Mahlon, besides a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other relatives.

Mr. Houghton was a member of the Humbird Lodge No. 191, F. & A. M., receiving the degrees of the order thirty-three years ago. He was also a member of the Eastern Star.9

Funeral services for Mrs. I. C. Houghton were held at the Methodist church in this village last Friday afternoon, and were attended by many old neighbors and friends. Rev. V. D. Weidler, pastor of St. John’s Church officiated. Burial was in Houghtonburg Cemetery.

Emma Elizabeth Levis, daughter of Mahlon and Marie Levis, was born on a farm about a mile northeast of Black River Falls, on march 28, 1855. She grew to young womanhood in that vicinity, and was employed in a millinery store in that city at the time of her marriage to Ira Clarence Houghton, on Jun 8, 1873 – sixty-one years age last June.

With the exception of about fifteen years their home has been on the homestead of Mr. Houghton’s father, Oliver Houghton, in the town of Alma, Jackson County, in the vicinity being known to all as “Houghtonburg.”

In the early fall following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Houghton went to Viscalia, Calif., and located on a homestead, which was their home for seven years. Returning to Wisconsin, they remained but a short time, and then when the Dakota boom was on, went to Nelson county, in North Dakota, and operated a farm near Michigan City for eight seasons.

Then returning to Wisconsin to remain until the time of her death about 3:30 Tuesday morning, Nov. 27, 1934, at the advanced age of 79 years, 7 months and 29 days.

Mrs. Houghton was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a past matron of Humbird Chapter No. 109.
