WOODBINE MAN KILLED WHEN HIT BY TRAIN

Newell Houghton, 70 a life long resident of this county, was struck by a
train on the North Western railroad at the moll road crossing just north of
Woodbine Saturday. His car was stopped on the railroad and he was standing
by it when the fast frieght struck him.

Mr Houghton was born at Carver Minnesota, April 22, 1866, and had reached
the age of 70 years 6 months and 23 days. He was left an orphan at the age
of six and came to Iowa and was taken into the home of Edward Houghton one
of the early settlers----(note: paper folded can't read it off the
mocrofilm)- --Mile Grove. In 1889, he was married to Martha Smith and to
this union three children were born, Mrs. Edna Royer of Woodbine, Mrs Esta
Dungan of Omaha, and Lyle S. of Des Moines, who with the wife and six
grandchildren of the immediate family survive.

The funeral was held at the Heft Funeral Home Monday afternoon, conducted by
Fred A. Fry. The I.O.O.F. Lodge of which he had long been a member,
conducted the service at the grave.12
