Houghton, who served as president of the organization from 1985 to 1986 and was the former president of Houghton Chemical Corporation. Below is the obituary provided by the Houghton Chemical Corporation.

Proctor W. Houghton, born November 24, 1916 in Worcester, Massachusetts, passed away on January 12, 2012. Having lived most of his life in Newton, MA, with a summer home in Brewster, MA, Proctor graduated from Wesleyan University in 1939. An active alumnus, he was given the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1984 and funded the Houghton Scholarship awarded annually based upon activities, interests, big ambition and vigorous effort rather than on grades. During World War II, he was employed by Allied Chemical starting up new defense plants. Since then, throughout his professional life he was the President of Houghton Chemical Corporation headquartered in Boston, MA.

He was active in a variety of business, educational, and charitable philanthropic organizations. As a young man Proctor distinguished himself as an Eagle Scout, becoming a co-founder of a troop in Wellesley, MA. He was on the Allston Board of Trade, recognized as Member of the Year in 1997. He was a board member and President of the Drug Chemical and Allied Trades Association (DCAT), a national business organization.

He was President and Director of the Ford Hall Forum, the oldest free public educational lecture series in America located in Boston, MA. Proctor was honored by the West End House in 1998. He was a board member of the Vocational Adjustment Center, an active member of the Allston Zoning Advisory Committee and a corporate member of the Boston Aquarium, Museum of Science, Morgan Memorial and a strong supporter of WGBH.

Always concerned with national issues and working toward world peace he was an active participant and supporter of various Quaker organizations, especially the American Friends Service Committee, an organizer and treasurer of the Boston Chapter of Business Executives Move for New Priorities, an organization especially active during the Vietnam War where he was a member of their National Council, and also active in the Union of Concerned Scientists, the United Nations Association, and board member of the Federation of American Scientists and the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology.

Working in his residential community Proctor was a cofounder and director of the Newton Arts Center and an active collector. He was a board member and investment director of Horace Cousens Funds of Newton, MA.

Beloved husband of the late Eloise Kautz Houghton, he is survived by his four children, Glen of Cape Neddick, ME, Bruce of Cambridge, MA, Mark of Lexington, MA and Laurel of Fairfax, CA, and five grandchildren, Nathanial, Abigail, Amanda, Jessica and Mirabai.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to the American Friends Service Committee, 2161 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02140 and Wesleyan University, 318 High Street, Middletown, CT 06459-0472 would be appreciated.
