NoteDr Richard Houghton at one point actually had possession of Edward J. Houghton’s congressional Medal of Honor. The story I heard from my father is that Dr. Richard Houghton had inherited both the medal and letter from someone. When Dr. Houghton died, the Houghtons asked his widow, Mary, if she would return those items to them. Mary agreed to give them the medal but she kept the letter. Since she and her husband had no children of their own, it eventually ended up with my father.
Navy document of Medal of Honor came from a grand daughter Kathy Leary who’s grandmother was raised by Dr Richard Houghton and his wife Mary Duane. Not sure of timing, but when Richard died in 1935 it appears that surviving bloodline Houghton’s asked for the medal back. Not many bloodline descendants left after this period. I suspect medal went to Mary T. Houghton, a first cousin to Andy Houghton, she lived in Ashmont and died in 1941. My other guess would be Arthur Houghton who married the actress and lived in California. Arthur died in 1972 in Los Angeles, he was almost 100 years old.

Hi Eric:
See attached Word doc for tons of info on Daniel's time in Ireland :). Bless Daniel for providing the name of his town in Ireland on his naturalization papers and for Catherine Houghton Doherty in relaying the family history. I just saw the name on his naturalization late yesterday.

As far as McCusan is concerned, I believe the name is McCarn...more info in the attached. My take on your family history is Papa Edward and his 2 brothers came to Ireland. They married Irish girls, Edward married Bridget McCarn. I don't think Bridget came from Holland. The question is - of all the places on the planet why did Edward and his brothers come to Cleagh, Clonmany, Ireland? Someone they knew must have been there OR it was a new settlement trying to attract people for whatever the reason. Frequently it is religious freedom like when Catherine the Great of Russia offered religious freedom to the Jews or the reason is free land. I don't think it was religious freedom.

Here's a suggestion, I would add to Papa Edward Houton (the one married to Bridget McCusan) in Ancestry that according to family history, he was from Holland and immigrated to Cleagh, Clonmany. This will be helpful to anyone who comes across your family tree. Otherwise people researching Boston ancestors may think he was originally from Ireland like I did and end up thinking he is part of their family etc. Most people on Ancestry will just add anything that sounds good into their trees.
I will send Richard's baptisms in a separate email.
Kathy

Hi Kathy,
Good questions below. I could never locate anything on the King Kiaro reference. On the Houghton family move from Holland to Ireland I have no additional information on this. I wish we knew the timing of the move. I can only speculate at this point.
Here is my shot... given Houghton/Houton is a English name and that they the “boys” were Protestant. It possible, that during the English civil wars of the 1630-1650 that the English King and the royalist fled to Holland to escape Cromwell’s army. I read that during the 1870/1880 that when the political environment changed, that the English who fled to Holland started to migrate back to England and Ireland.
It would be great to find some records to support this theory. You are correct, I believe Kate Doherty is referring to her great grandfather and wife Ellen McCusan as coming from Holland.
It would be great and much appreciated if you could locate and pull the baptism records on Richard Houghton’s children. He had five boys: Edward 1841, Andrew 1843, Richard 1845, Thomas (Michael) 1847 and Charles E.J. 1851. The first three boys served in the civil war. Edward was awarded the congressional Medal of Honor. This caused some confusion with me when I started my research years ago. As my grandfather also served in the civil war and his name is Edward. Let me know if you want any paperwork on Edward J. Houghton, the war hero. If you google his name it will come up. But I have some other stuff on him... Eric

Hi Eric:
I found 2 locations in Donegal from https://www.swilson.info/index.php. Neither is Malin Head. Clonmany is near Malin Head. I am going to ask a friend if she knows where it may be. Clehagh, Clonmany
Cleenagh, Fahan Lower Kathy

Hi Eric:

About the letter you sent me....Did anyone ever confirm or have anything additional to add about Edward Houghton and his brothers coming from Holland and moving to Ireland? It is a fabulous story. I assume she was speaking of Edward Houghton husband of Ellen McCusan having come from Holland with his brothers.
I SEE GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE REGARDING WHERE IS CLEARGH....lol. Let me take a look at another resource i have regarding this location.
Michael Houghton's naturalization papers have a town of birth listed. It looks like Clea?gh. It could be misspelled. Do you have any theories on where that townland is in county Donegal?
Did you ever learn anything about King Kiaro who your Patrick Doherty from Malin Well is a descendant of. I have never heard of him, but I could just be unaware.
Your ancestor sure remembered a lot of detail...truly amazing. Thanks so much sending it. I am still absorbing it all. Sorry for all the emails, I find this fascinating and get excited over ancestor history.

Yes I have seen the Houghton site you mentioned. My Houghtons are not on there...think I got discouraged when I saw that several years ago.

If you would like the other brothers kids baptisms let me know. I can send them.
