ResearchMarie Cunningham: "see if a Houghton falls out who went to the North Pole with Admiral Peary. History says only Peary and another explorer named Henson and 4 eskimos made it to where they thought the pole was.
Anyways, my 95-year-old aunt remembers sitting on a polar bear rug which Andy Houghton's nephew brought back from one of Peary's expeditions. Andy gave him a bundle of money to pay for his expenses on the trip. We don't know which nephew went to the pole but it was either Arthur J., Dr. Richard H. or Joseph C., as I recall "; CJV: unable to verify this family tale; elsewhere she says bear rug was from Alaska expedition

Eric Williams: I pass this along to uncover the Thomas and Michael Houghton confusion. It appears that my great cousin may have been using or was called Michael Hooten during his young years, but perhaps in his later years may have went by the name of Thomas M. Houghton. At least that is how his death certificate was filed. Also his tombstone reads as Thomas M. Houghton which is in holyhood cemetery Brookline Ma.

Note: as part of my records, I include 1850, 1855 and the 1860 federal and state census. Richard Houghton lived in East Boston with his wife and children which back in the 1800's would have been a ferry ride over to the old North End where his brothers (my great grandfather Edward lived). Also worthy of special notice is: see his son Edward is listed as being born in Alabama in 1841. The rest of Richard's sons were born in Boston during the 1840's. Richard Houghton had two wives and his second wife Bridget actually was left to raise his children from his first wife when he died.

Eric2
NoteEric Williams: had the monument erected at Holyhood cemetery in Boston in memory of his parents and Civil War veteran brother Edward J. Houghton.
