Immigration1725Leominster, Worcester Co., MA, USA, "the new grant", with members of his father's family. In 1725, he and James Boutelle ventured a few miles farther north than Sterling and erected houses in what is now the south and southwest part of the town of Leominster. He was the first settler of Leominster. They lived as one family until after 1729 when Gershom had a farm of 162 acres surveyed.

Worcester Co. Hx.:
The southwesterly part of the grant, that which became Sterling, was settled earlier than the northwesterly part which became Leominster, although the latter town was incorporated several decades earlier than Sterling. The settlement of Leominster began in 1725, the pioneer being Gershom Houghton. Conant, in 1823, wrote: "The settlement . . . did not commence till the year 1725. At this time Gershom Houghton, who was the first inhabitant, seated himself in the south part of the town, and erected the first dwelling." This house stood on the farm now owned by W. H. Boyden, and a boulder, placed by the Leominster Historical Society, marks the spot.6,15,16

BiographyWeis: "Mr. Houghton was the first settler in that part of Lancaster which is now the city of Leominster: this was in the year 1725. Robert Houghton's land in Leominster was surveyed, May 22, 1722, and was deed to his son Gershom, November 4, 1723. Mr. Houghton built his home in Leominster soon after his marriage. He was a proprietor of the additional grant. He served as the first town treasurer of Leominster, 1740-1742, and as selectman there, 1750. In 1748, he was a soldier in the Louisburg expedition, under Captain Jonathan
White."

Worcester Hx:

“ In 1725, Gershom Houghton and James Boutell ventured a few miles farther north than Sterling, and erected houses in what is now the south and southwesterly part of Leominster. Seven years afterwards Jonathan White fixed himself in the north part. And in two years more Thomas Wilder and Nathaniel Carter became permanent settlers. And soon afterwards settlements were commenced in different parts of the northern half of the grant (for it is yet all Lancaster) by Benjamin Whitcomb, Jonathan Wilson, Jonathan Carter, William Divoll, Gardner Wilder, Ebenezer Polley, Oliver Carter, Josiah Carter, Thomas Houghton, Thomas Davenport and others.”19,21
ResearchJWH, Burr & Gage, MLM give all data (parents, mar., children, dd) for Gershom of John line, not Ralph line. Lancaster VRs gives bd only for Gershom, son of Joseph and Jane, and baptism for Gershom, son of Robert.24,4

ResearchMay 23, 2009Dear Dr. Vella I have been researching Thomas Benjamin Houghton and his descendants for over 20 years. My wife is a family descendant. However, for 20 years I have hit a brick wall and hope you can offer me some suggestions. I believe that Thomas Benjamin Houghton and Isaac Smith Houghton (I) are brothers but can find no proof to prove this relationship. The basis for my claim is the U. S. Federal Census of 1860 which indicates that Thomas Benjamin’s son Thomas Baldwin was living in Bloomington, Illinois. I have several sources that prove this Thomas B. in Bloomington is Thomas Baldwin. Also residing with Thomas Baldwin is an Isaac Smith Houghton and his father is Isaac Smith Houghton (I). He and Thomas Baldwin are approximately the same age.
In the 1850 Census, both Isaac Smith Houghton’s (I and II) were living in Dorcester, MA. Also, Thomas Baldwin Houghton was living in Dorchester, MA as the Family Bible indicates one of his son’s, Samuel, was born in Dorchester in 1852. It seems logical that these Houghton’s are from the same family.
Unfortunately, I am unable to find a source indicting who were the parents of Thomas Benjamin Houghton. If Isaac Smith Houghton (I) is his brother than Jesse Houghton would be the father. I would appreciate any advice. Is there enough circumstantial evidence to make the assumption? Would DNA testing of my wife help?
Following are the numbers of the individuals mentioned above and their Houghton Web Page numbers:
Thomas Benjamin Houghton #14810
Thomas Baldwin Houghton #14813
Isaac Smith Houghton (I) #14869
Isaac Smith Houghton (II) #41399
Jesse Houghton #14849
I have one correction. The listing on Thomas Baldwin Houghton says “he died before 1880 at Matmaton, KS, USA. He died on 7 November 1869 in Gridley.
Thank you
