LetterDec 20, 1922Wellington, OH, USA, MLM: "Note: Mark Howard Houghton's first letter to JWH, Wellington, O., brought this reply from his dau. Josie, Dated Dec. 20, 1922:..."I forgot to mention that the Houghton Genealogy contains all the Houghtons from 1665 that is known of the early Houghtons from the time of their settlement in Massachusetts, 1645. It is on that account a valuable book, and as such will never be published again, because the cost of securing the records of the individuals, no such publication will ever again be attempted. The records of the early families are so complete, that if they can trace their record back three or four generations, a connection can be found in a family...(break in paper), and in thirty instances I have not failed in more than three to connect with the family tree. Father tries to write this, but he is too sick..."

The first answer, same date: "Your letter received a few days ago. Father has been hard sick and is so weak now he cannot sit up long at a time. When family records has not been complete, he has to send them items, and he printed lists in order they should go, then gummed edge and stuck sheet in the proper place in the book. By using thin paper that has worked fine. It does not seem as though it would be worth while for any one else to attempt to get up another book. Father lost a lot of money in his attempt. You would be surprised at how few people are interested in their family history. Father says you better order a book from him for ten dollars, than print or have someone type on sheets like I said, and stick them in place. Mother died a year ago and over, Father is so sick every little while, it would not be certain about our making a like like you would want. He is past eighty-eight.
Hoping this letter will be of service to you, I am,
Sincerely,
/s./ Josephine Houghton.

Wellington, O., Dec. 20, 1922

P.S. Father has used two books to put added material in. He would like a record of your family to add."

A follow up letter was returned, "unknown." Tho it was addressed to "The Heirs and/or relatives of Josie W. Houghton, Wellington, Ohio."10,11

RetirementJul 14, 1957"He's seen city grow" "Mr. Long Beach" Quits"
by George Weeks
"The man who knows the most about the physical growth of Long Beach is retiring after more than 35 years continuous municipal service.
Mark H. Houghton, chief right-of-way engineer, sometimes called "Mr. Long Beach," has turned over his wide assortment of city duties to five assistants and gone on vacation. His retirement will become effective July 31.
But he intends to remain here. "Long Beach is the most interesting city in the world," he declared emphatically. "Watching it grow has been amazing."
He will be guest of honor at a dinner being arranged for July 30 by Cityu Engineer Jess D. Gilkerson and other employes in that department. Houghton's tenure dates back to Dec. 1, 1921.
He began as a draftsma, but soon afterward he was working with Arthur H. Adams (later city engineer and director of the County Regional Planning Commission) on assignments that eventually led to the development of the right-of-way division.
Within a six-month period in 1923 and 1924, Houghton recalled, Long Beach's area doubled--from 14 to 28 square miles--because of the annexation of three big sections. These were North Long Beach, a northeast section and the Alamitos Bay neighborhood.
When he started work, the city's northerly boundary was along Willow St., except for a short stretch of Wardlow Rd. Long Beach had added only nine increments in its original boundaries. Now 155 annexations have been completed and another big one is pending, subject to an election July 25 in a South Lakewood area.
Working with other engineers and frequently with Deputy City Atty. Alice S. Arnold, Houghton had a prominent part in nealry all those annexations.
He was also the engineer directly in charge of hundreds of property acquistions for all kinds of public works, including the major improvements being financed from the $29, 219,000 bond issue voted last year.
At 68, Houghton, still is slender and active and retains a photographic mind. His associates credit him with being able to "walk off" the boundaries of Long Beach without consulting a map.
Typical of his mastery of physical detail was a telephone conversation he had on one of his last days on the job. The caller was an agent for the owner of property outside Long Beach who was contemplating annexation.
"You will have to get rid of that old barn," said Houghton, without looking at any files. "How do you plan to get sewer service? I suggest you tie in with the line that comes along the country club property. Lay out the lots so the easement there won't interfere...Oh sure, I'll still be around if you want to ask any questions."
Born in Brattleboro, Vt., Houghton received his degree in engineering in 1911 at Tufts University. He came here in 1919 and was associated with his father in the grocery business until a chance meeting with an official lead to his appointment to the city staff.
"I have enjoyed every day of my work for the city, especially its variety, and I expect to continue to enjoy Long Beach, " he said.
A son of the Houghtons, Scott is superintendent of production for a Standard Oil concesssion in Sumatra. They have a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Billings fo Long Beach.
One of Houghtons assistants since 1948, Merle Chaplin, will be appointed head of the division, Gilkerson announced.
Note1972He received a citation for "The Senior Citizen of the Year" award, a church award. He had presented Mayor Bull, Oslo, Norway, a letter of greetings from Long Beach to his city. Mrs. Houghton remarked that the Norwegian government is one of almost pure socialism, putting a 20% tax on everything.4

Retired city engineering official Mark H. Houghton, known to many as "Mr. Long Beach," died Wednesday in Memorial Hospital Medical Center. He was 89.

Possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of his adopted home town's history and geography, the native New Englander received his affectionate nichname from other Long Beach history buffs. Through the years he regularly aided persons seeking lost anecdotes or other information about Long Beach after 1919.

Born Oct. 10, 1889 in Brattleboro, Vt., the engineering student met Alma, his wife-to-be, while they were fellow students at Tufts University, in Medford, Mass., where each graduated in 1911. Married in 1915 at Alameda, Calif., the Houghton's celebrated their golden anniversary in 1965.

Houghton came to Long Beach in 1919 to work with his father, who operated a grocery store at 10th St. and Alamitos Ave. He entered municipal service in 1921 as a draftman and remained with the city until July 31, 1957, when he retired as chief right-of-way engineer.

He plotted much of Long Beach's phenomenal growth of the 1920's, when the city's physical area doubled from 14 to 28 square miles. During that time Belmont Shore, much of North Long Beach and a large northeasterly tract were annexed.

Houghton had remained active until recently, serving as a school district Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPs) lecturer on local history.

Just last April, he recalled those boom days for students in two social studies classes at Stephens Junior High School. Their teacher, Mary Miho, told newspaper columnist F.C.Anderson: "Mr. Houghton's fashionable appearance and boundless energy, as well as his vast store of knowledge, certaintly belied his age....While the kids were impressed with his facts and stories, I was literally had to shoo him out the door at the conclusion...He and some of the kids were busily chatting away about what the Pike used to be like."

In addition to his widow, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Billings; a son Scott Houghton; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held Friday at 11:00a.m. in Belmont Heights United Methodist Church, 317 Termino Ave. Officiants will be the Rev. Marvin A. Johnson and Long Beach Masonic Lodge No. 327, Houghton's only fraternal affiliation. Burial follows in Oakwood Cemetery, Townsend, Vt. Brothers Funeral Directors are in charge locally.
