Biography

Memoranda of the Stearns family : including record...: Dr. George Stearns was the youngest child of Ephraim and Molly (Gilman) Stearns (page 20), and was born in Walpole, N. H., May 10, 1802. He graduated t the Harvard medical college, in the class of 1827, and perfected his studies in Boston, where he practiced his profession about three years, when he removed to Groton, Mass. He married, July 2, 1868, Mrs. Ann (Moulton) Gilson, widow of Joshua Gilson of Groton. Dr. Stearns died March 7, 1882, aged 80. He was the oldest physician in Groton at the time of his death. Dr. Stearns's father, Dea. Ephraim Stearns, was a Revolutionary soldier. After the close of the war he settled upon his father's homestead in Walpole, where he died Oct. 19, 1843, aged 88 years. Mrs. Stearns died Oct. 27, 1850. They had 13 children. Ephraim's father, Moses Stearns, died Sept. 24, 1808, aged 80 years. His wife, Ruth (Houghton), died Feb. 27, 1815, aged
82. Josiah W. Stearns, great-grandson of Moses, abandoned the old homestead of his ancestors in 1863. It had been occupied by the family for ninety
years. He removed to Illinois and settled in Otseka.
