NoteNancy Carlynn Houghton: "And I found this newspaper article, without a year:
Feb 12—Today being Lincoln's birthday, a Peoria connection, or how Lincoln taught a Peorian how to shoot marbles: When traveling the circuit, Lincoln stopped at the home of the Houghtons and asked for a night's lodging. Elijah Houghton, of (then) 221 Cooper Street, Peoria, recalled for a Journal transcript how his father told Abe that with 15 children in the family, it might not be possible. Lincoln "looked us over and said that if we were all good natured we should be able to sleep together under one roof." The father invited him in. "During the evening we had nothing to read and the amusement was furnished by Lincoln who gathered the boys around him on the floor and taught them to play marbles." When Houghton met Lincoln later in life, Abe said to him: "We have time for one game of marbles." ...."and the lawyer and the younger men would get down in the dust of the courtyard to play the game."—Lincoln, never one to put on airs.

Next to which my grandmother has written: "Elijah Houghton would be your great, great, great, great grandfather. The location was a farm around Elpaso and Bloomington Illinois." Which seems strange, as the article lists an address in Peoria. It isn't her family and she may have been confused. (NCH: The article seems to be a later "editorializaing" of an earlier article.)8
